The Neoplatonists struggled with the question whether our higher intellectual selves have distinct individuality, and thus they fed both sides in the great medieval debate between Aquinas and the followers of Averroes on individual human immortality. This is the third (metaphysics and logic) out of three magnificent academic volumes treating the subject of neo-Platonism, during its emergence to a position of dominance around the 200-600 AD era. This three-fold series comprises a condensed collection of neo-Platonic commentary on Aristotle as glossed by authors who generally believed Plato and Aristotle to, by and large, agree on main points of philosophical doctrine. Selections are drawn from the extensive 'Ancient Commentators on Aristotle' series and are arranged here in an orderly manner according to topical-matter. Detailed explanatory notes and headings, with cross-references, accompany the primary textual matter, making this series a superior educational tool for serious readers interested in late classical/early medieval philosophy. In addition to this work on Psychology, Ethics and Religion, volume two treats of ancient Physics and three of Logic and Metaphysics: they are all to be read and enjoyed collectively. So it is a work both in literary criticism and in philosophy. The approach is strongly influenced by Walter Benjamin’s philosophy of language and Theodor Adorno’s aesthetic theory, but the philosophical thought of other philosophers—notably Plato, Kant, Hegel, Emerson, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein—figures significantly in the reading and interpretation. The essence of the argument is that, despite its damaged condition (standardization, commodification, staleness), language is, as such, by virtue of its very existence, the bearer of a utopian or messianic promise of happiness. Moreover, it is argued that, by reconciling the two senses of sense (sensuous sense and intelligible sense), showing the sheer power of words to create fictional worlds and destroy what they have just created, and redeeming the revelatory power of words—above all, the power to turn the familiar into something no longer familiar, something astonishing or perplexing—the two writers in this study sustain our hope for a world of reconciled antagonisms and contradictions, evoking in the way they freely play with the sounds and meanings of words, some intimations of a world—our world here, this very world, not some heavenly world—in which the promise of happiness would be fulfilled and redeemed. In the first part of the book, reflecting on the poetry of Stevens, Kleinberg-Levin argues that the poet defies the correspondence theory of truth to enable words to be faithful to truth as transformative and revelatory—what Heidegger calls “unconcealment”, translating the Greek. He also argues that in the pleasure we get from the sensuous play of words, there is an anticipation of the promise of happiness that challenges the theological doctrine of an otherworldly happiness and makes the religious experience seem like a paltry substitute. In the second part of the book, Kleinberg-Levin shows how Nabokov inherits Mallarmé’s conception of literature, causing with his word-plays the sudden reduction of the fictional world he has just so compellingly created to its necessary conditions of materiality: white paper, ink, print on the page. We thus see the novel as a work of fiction, as mere semblance; we see its conditions of possibility, created and destroyed before our very eyes. But the pleasure in seeing words doing this, and the pleasure in their sensuous materiality, are intimations of the promise of happiness that language bears. Using a Kantian definition of modernism, according to which a work is modernist if it reveals and questions the inherited assumptions about its necessary conditions of possibility, these studies show how and why both Stevens and Nabokov are exemplars of literary modernism.

Few if any philosophers have had the courage to engage the formal and conceptual difficulties of literary modernism, particularly its regulating idea that, as the poet Stèphane Mallarmé argued, language is made of words but not of the things we use words to produce: concepts, propositions, descriptions, and even expressions of feeling. Not that the literary work lacks such things, but the materiality of its language is irreducible to any of these discursive functions. On the contrary, as David Kleinberg-Levin makes clear in this remarkable book, the sensuous material of language is itself the medium of aesthetic experience as well as an experience of world-making that transforms our relation to how things are. He develops his arguments by way of careful critical readings of Wallace Stevens’s poetry and poetics and by close attention to the self-reflexive features of Vladimir Nabokov’s novels, in which developments of plot and character are always mediated by innovative wordplay and ironic comments on the forms and conventions of fiction-writing that Nabokov himself is employing. Kleinberg-Levin’s principal argument is that, contrary to a good deal of received opinion, the prominence of “sensuous materiality” in poetry and fiction is not a symptom of a decadent aestheticism but the fulfillment of a truly philosophical aesthetics: namely, the transfiguration of our everyday world into genuinely desirable forms of life. It is even more hopeful in showing us how Wallace Stevens could find truth and transfiguration in the realm of the sensible and imaginal — a redemption faithful to the earth, as Nietzsche put it, and a more modest happiness than attempts at resolving our pain or transcending it. Nabokov, in Kleinberg-Levin’s account, playfully explores the possibilities of language to draw upon its own sensuous divinity in the materiality and density of its workings, again providing us with a resource for originating meaning, reconciling the intellectual and sensuous, and intensifying beauty. His method of classification of medieval swords from the Viking era up to the sixteenth century is the world norm today, and the many fascinating pictures, descriptions, and drawings of the most rare and precious specimens from collections all over the world are a must-have for the student of medieval arms. Whether collector, blade smith, European martial artist or historian, Oakeshott's work is an indispensable reference in the study of medieval arms history. His descriptions of the individual known specimens are detailed and thorough, and make for a good source of reference, while his last entry, an article on the disputed authenticity of a sword of Edward III reads like a detective story. The detailed x-ray pictures, close-up photographs, and lab reports in respect of the sword's examination make you not want to put the book down, but read on to find out if this controversial sword is a fake, or indeed the real thing.

A wasted opportunity

The idea to write an account of architectural styles and features using old engravings was an excellent one. Unfortunately this book is badly let down by not crediting and giving bibliographical reference to the sources of the fine engravings used. This is tremendously frustrating for readers like myself who are interested in seeking out the original publications and, in many cases, accessing better quality versions of the engravings which are poorly reproduced in this book. Some of the reproduced illustrations have been so much reduced in size that valuable detail is lost. The plans of ancient Beijing are a case in point. No indication is provided of buildings which have been destroyed or seriously damaged since the original 18th and 19th century artwork was produced. Neither are fanciful reconstructions differentiated from existing buildings in the antiquarian illustrations. Moreover, buildings are often shown without identifying them specifically. This fatally flawed publication is not a patch on Banister Fletcher's 'A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method.'

About the Author
Pamela Hartmann taught in Korea (through the Peace Corps) and then in Greece before returning to California, where she taught at UCLA, USC, Santa Monica College, West Los Angeles College, Pepperdine University, and for thirty years in the Intensive English Program at Evans Community Adult School, in the Los Angeles Unified School District. GOOD FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Hi, I am college student, who is really bad in English. First, I bought this book in used condition. Almost questions has answered in handwriting. Some of them correct and very few was wrong. Second, this book are fits for International students because writer wrote in easy arrange compose. Hope this review help at least to make decision to buy.

Useless

250 8x11 pages without a single picture, drawing, image, graphic, table, graph or equation. Zero. Not one.
The section on calculating the net impedance of speakers without an equation is hilarious: "This means turning each number on its head, then adding the numbers in this form, then changing the resulting number back to ordinary form."
I bet you have never thought of an XLR connector as "three small round pins/holes forming a triangular pattern inside an 18mm diameter circle."
There is also some questionable information, such as "the gain setting knobs [on an amplifier] should generally be set at maximum..." Never seen that one in print.
Much better choices for an actual book are Davis: "Sound Reinforcement Handbook" and Stark: "Live Sound Reinforcement".

This text is relatively complete and is an excellent reference for graduate level courses but is frustratingly difficult for undergraduates. For undergraduates, the text is obscure, difficult to understand, and lacks sufficient examples, underlining, italics, case boxes, and other reader's aids. Many of my brightest and best undergraduate students found it very difficult to summarize and retain information abstracted from the text. Most have been highly critical not only of the text but of the very poor selection of test items in the instructor's test bank. Many distractors are nonfunctional, the wording is vague, and the correct alternative is sometimes obscure even on open book/open note tests. It is paradoxical that a text in test theory and construction has produced a test bank with poorly constructed multiple choice items, as my classes have consistently demonstrated through item analysis using the principles outlined in the text! Second, in some areas the text is insufficiently complete for graduate students. Frequently, the authors mention new technologies or approaches but with sufficient lack of detail to be frustrating. Finally, the text suffers from antiquated language (e.g., sentences that begin with: "It will be remembered that ...") and excessive use of the passive voice, making the text unnecessarily difficult to understand.

Not ready for undergraduate Students

In general, if technical information about Psychological Testing is what you are looking for and you have completed a masters program, this text may be perfect for you. Even thought my exposure to this text was for a undergraduate college class. I found it very hard to follow and understand even after the 3rd reading. I found that the material in the text was very in-depth, but lacking chapter conclusions or summaries.

Inappropriate for undergrads but ideal for grad students. Anastasi's classic text (now updated), has transformed generations of "intuitive" clinicians-in-training into serious behavioral scientists. Note that this is _not_ a great sourcebook for how to administer or evaluate _specific_ tests... Rather, it is an outstanding discussion of the science of assessment, e.g., in _general_, what would it mean for a questionnaire to be "valid"? Or, in _general_, what would it mean for a test to be "biased"?

Not only for asthma, but also for colds, flus, and much, much more

If you've tried other breathing methods or yoga and found them too complicated or time-consuming, not to worry, the Buteyko Method is so simple that even children can learn it. And they do. In this book you'll learn how to do it yourself, at home. What's here is more than enough to get you started and give you a real foundation in the method. Using the easy-to-follow instructions in the book, in under 3 minutes, I cleared a stuffy nose and went to bed breathing freely and easily for the first time in days. And you do this sitting down, with no pills or sprays or anything. On top of that, by breathing this way, you focus better and your energy stays balanced much longer. For example, I used to feel sleepy after lunch, and would find myself yawning and ready to doze off for a nap. Now I follow the instructions in the book, and in less than 5 minutes, I am rested and ready to go. Another very nice benefit is feeling great upon waking every morning, even after having just six hours of sleep.

Works for sleep apnea too.

The information in this book is very powerful. It is also counterintuitive until you understand Dr. Buteyko's discoveries. For the past 20 years I have worn out three CPAP machines and a dental appliance trying to relieve my diagnosed severe sleep apnea condition. I believe the condition and the CPAP machines caused me to undergo three heart catheter ablation operations for persistant atrial fibrillation. After only three weeks using the information in this book along with some personal consultations with the author I am now breathing normally and free from using dental appliance gizmos and CPAP contraptions while sleeping. It is key, as another reviewer has said, that you do the exercises and follow instructions.

This book really helped me!

This is a very unique publication containing original texts by Dr. Buteyko. There are also texts by three other medical professionals explaining why and how the Breathing Normalization method works. The book offers step-by-step instructions on how to improve your breathing. To me it was extremely useful. I was able to stop most of my asthma trouble by following recommendations in this book. Anyone who has asthma can benefit enormously by reading this book.
