Absolutely Amazing
By Elak Swindell
Being a fan of sound effects myself, though nowhere near to that of Ben Burtt, this book is great. I've always wondered what was done to make a specific creature voice or laser blast or spaceship engine sound, etc. in the various Star Wars films. This fascinating book covers them all, with the actual sounds to hear along with the information. My only complain would be that the sound unit on the side is a bit big. I can tell that 50% of the interior is probably air. Being that memory chips and electronics can be quite small these days, there was no need to make the unit so large, or as heavy. As for the book itself, it is a massive treasure trove of background information on all of the Star Wars movies to date. Any sound effect used in them is covered in detail with various pictures either from the films or behind-the-scenes shots pertaining to the sound. If you are a Star Wars or even just interested in sound effects in general, this is a must-have book.

Only one thing keeps me from giving it five stars...
By J. Chi
This is a great book for Star Wars fans, film students, sound engineers. To read how the various sounds were created and to listen to the result have wrought pure joy. However, the one thing that keeps me from giving this book five stars is that you can only access the sound by pressing the forward or backward buttons. It would have been great if one could enter the files number to hear the sounds. I am starting to worry that I will break the sound module from overuse.

Helped me pass the PE!
By Chris Garvin
Great introductory text for a non-IE. Very broad, covers most of the range of the IE topic. I used it as a study aid when studying for the PE exam; I passed, and I credit much of that to this book.

Good: Covers lots of stuff that was on the exam, including:

-Industrial processes (metal cutting, Taylor tool life eqn)

-Facility layout

-Facility location (traveling salesman, milk run algorithms)

-Operations planning (forecasting demand, EOQ, exponential forecasting)

-Project management (PERT, crashing, forward/backward pass)

-Good introduction to stats and probs in the appendix

Not-so-good:

-Lots of wasted space on management theory (get a business text instead)

-Computer stuff is out-of-date

It does not go into substantial detail, so it is (as titled) an introductory text. Still, I highly recommend it to the non-IE.

For begineers only!
By Haytham
This book is just an introduction; it only explains the very basic concepts of IE, it's nothing new to professionals. It's only good if you have never heard about IE before.

Response to Uninformed Review
By John Regener
The previous reviewer obviously has not read the book that he rated so low. Harold J. Rosen is an Honorary member of The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), an honor given to few CSI members. This book, in its first edition, predates the CSI Manual of Practice, and it has been updated over several decades.

Construction Specifications Writing: Principles and Practices has been the leading textbook for teaching construction specifications at colleges and universities.

The 4th edition has been superseded by an expanded and updated 5th edition, co-authored by this reviewer, that is consistent with the CSI Manual of Practice and includes more examples and resources than CSI's MOP.

Keeping up to date and getting better
By RWLarchitect
This book has a long and very fine history and tradition. Rosen was a master, but recently other masters have been used an co-authors. The book is the better for their input and is certainly a comforting teacher to all those who are new to specifications writing, or who need a resoruce to check from time to time. Simply, excellence getting better!

Classic in concept; tutorial in execution. The authors have seen fit to modify and augment the book to meet the changing world of specifications. This is a much needed, and high value book. Kudos to the authors-- high recommendation to prospective buyers and readers. Every design professional's book shelf NEEDS this book.

An understanding of Construction Specifications
By James J Yaw
I am a Intern-Architect and have little exposure to written specifications in my office. This book provides short chapters with questions at the end of each chapter. Since a lot of this reading is enough to put a person to sleep, several times over, then testing yourself with the questions at the end of the chapter and checking the answers at the end of the book help to indicate if you have a grasp of the information provided. If not, it is time to re-read the chapter. I find the book is well worth the cost if you need an understanding of Construction Specifications for the Architectural Registration Exam. Best wishes.

The flesh of the orchid, by James Hadley Chase

James Hadley Chase (René Brabazon Raymond) was born in London in 1906 and started his career as a bookseller. With the aid of a dictionary of American slang and reference books on the American underworld he wrote his first novel, NO ORCHIDS FOR MISS BLANDISH, over six weekends. The book achieved remarkable popularity and became one of the best-sold books of the decade. FLESH OF THE ORCHID is a wild, thrill-ride of a sequel to NO ORCHIDS. Taking up the story 22 years later, the central figure is once again a Blandish girl, but Carol Blandish is not the helpless victim that her mother was. Indeed, she is a volatile blend of simmering sexuality, strained innocence and hair-trigger cruelty. Her explosive outbursts of savage violence make her a force to be reckoned with. Escaping from a mental institute during a raging storm, and definitely off her meds, Carol Blandish is soon pursued by a seedy cast of characters who all want a piece of the Blandish fortune. The novel bristles with crazy plot twists, edge-of-the-seat suspense and intriguing low-life's who mix it up for an immensely enjoyable read.

What Could Possibly Happen When A Beautiful Escapee From A Mental Institution Runs Into Two Hit Men
By Dave Wilde
Carol Blandish is a violent maniac locked up in a sanitarium, screaming for endless hours. She is also the heir to her grandfather's $6 million dollar fortune, has brilliant red hair, and a traffic-stopping figure. What happens when she breaks out of the sanitarium? What man could resist giving her a ride? What happens when her path crosses that of a man on the run from the Mob's two deadliest contract killers, the Sullivan brothers? And what about the fact that half the County wants to capture her and take control of her money?

This is a terrific thriller by James Hadley Chase that is a crime story, a love story, a tale of brotherly togetherness, and filled with retired circus performers, fortune hunters, and the like. It is solidly written and just filled with action and fights and gun battles. Great fun to read.

I'll still say Chase was a great writer and a master of great plots
By Amazon Customer
Although I found too many coincidences in the story, for instance how the characters in a far-away city just keep running into each other, end up in the same hospital, meet tragedy on the same street at the same time, mysteriously end up in the same locations at the same time, in three situations meet coincidentally in the same hotel over and over again, I'll still say Chase was a great writer and a master of great plots.

The Magician (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel), by Michael Scott

Nicholas Flamel appeared in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter—but did you know he really lived? And he might still be alive today! Discover the truth in Michael Scott’s New York Times bestselling series the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel in The Magician, book two.
After fleeing Ojai, Nicholas, Sophie, Josh, and Scatty emerge in Paris, the City of Lights. Home for Nicholas Flamel. Only this homecoming is anything but sweet. Perenell is still locked up back in Alcatraz and Paris is teeming with enemies. Nicollo Machiavelli, immortal author and celebrated art collector, is working for Dee. He’ s after them, and time is running out for Nicholas and Perenell. For every day spent without the Book of Abraham the Mage, they age one year—their magic becoming weaker and their bodies more frail. For Flamel, the Prophesy is becoming more and more clear.
It’s time for Sophie to learn the second elemental magic: Fire Magic. And there’ s only one man who can teach it to her: Flamel’s old student, the Comte de Saint-Germain—alchemist, magician, and rock star. Josh and Sophie Newman are the world’s only hope—if they don’t turn on each other first.

“Readers will be swept up by a plot that moves smartly along, leaving a wide trail of destruction and well-timed revelations.”—Kirkus Reveiws, Starred

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–9—Flamel and company return in this fast-paced follow-up to The Alchemyst (Delacorte, 2007). The immortal human Nicholas Flamel; Scathach, the veggie vampire warrior; and the mortal twins of legend, Josh and Sophie, are still on the run from the malicious Dr. John Dee. Flamel retains two of the pages of the legendary Book of Abraham, and Dee will do anything to get them. After hopping a ley line to Paris, our heroes barely escape the machinations of Dee's partner in crime, Niccolò Machiavelli. While finding shelter with fellow immortals (Joan of Arc turns out to be a particularly helpful ally), Josh attempts to deal with the fact that his twin sister is now incredibly powerful. Having had her powers "awakened," Sophie's new abilities make him surprisingly jealous—a fact that Dee may find useful. Scott tapers down the sheer breadth of gods, goddesses, legends, and myths already introduced in his first novel, which is a bit of a relief. Even though the plot moves forward at breakneck speed, the author is careful not to lose sight of his characters' struggles or inner demons. Fans of the previous novel will certainly find much to love, root for, and fear in this successful second installment.—Elizabeth Bird, New York Public Library

From Booklist
The Alchemyst (2007), the first book in The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series,  introduced a wide-ranging group of historical figures who have achieved immortality and are engaged in a present-day struggle for the fate of the world. This second entry picks up exactly where the first left off. Allied with the legendary Nicholas Flamel  on the “good” side are teenage twins Sophie and Josh, who are supremely gifted but with powers that are untrained. Countering them is a new archvillain, Niccolò Machiavelli, who, along with other figures from history and legend (Joan of Arc, a trio of Valkyries), swells the already impressive cast. Plundering every imaginable culture of their heroes and heroines is a clever feat, sure to draw all manner of historically and mythologically minded readers. One weakness starts to show through, however. In a six-book series such as this, each installment begins to feel like a lengthy, glorified chapter rather than its own book complete with a satisfying story arc and resolution. That said, this keeps the pace as an exciting and impeccably thought-out fantasy, well suited for those left in the lurch by Harry Potter’s recent exeunt. Grades 7-10. --Ian Chipman

The real heir to the Harry Potter books
By stuartm
I happened upon this and the first book in the series (The Alchemyst) just before July 4th and have quickly polished them off. For me the use of real historical characters alongside well-researched mythology is nigh irresistible.

The books move along smartly with plenty of action and a narrative that is propulsive and unrelenting. In many ways these feel more like Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books than Harry Potter.

Note that these books are clearly written to be "safe" for a younger audience. No sex, and fairly restrained violence. These are exciting and tense books, but still PG (or maybe barely PG-13).

I am intrigued by the ambiguity around several of the main characters including Machiavelli and Flamel and am eager to see where these books go. Highly recommended.

Infant Baptism in Reformation Geneva: The Shaping of a Community, 1536-1564 (St Andrews Studies in Reformation History), by Karen E. Spier

This book examines the beliefs, practices and arguments surrounding the ritual of infant baptism and the raising of children in Geneva during the period of John Calvin's tenure as leader of the Reformed Church, 1536-1564. It focuses particularly on the years from 1541 onward, after Calvin's return to Geneva and the formation of the Consistory. The work is based on sources housed primarily in the Genevan State Archives, including the registers of the Consistory and the City Council. While the time period of the study may be limited, the approach is broad, encompassing issues of theology, church ritual and practices, the histories of family and children, and the power struggles involved in transforming not simply a church institution but the entire community surrounding it. The overarching argument presented is that the ordinances and practices surrounding baptism present a framework for relations among child, parents, godparents, church and city. The design of the baptismal ceremony, including liturgy, participants and location, provided a blueprint of the reformers' vision of a well ordered community. To comprehend fully the development and spread of Calvinism, it is necessary to understand the context of its origins and how the ideas of Calvin and his Reformed colleagues were received in Geneva before they were disseminated throughout Europe and the world. In a broad sense this project explores the tensions among church leaders, city authorities, parents, relatives and neighbours regarding the upbringing of children in Reformed Geneva. More specifically, it studies the practice of infant baptism as manifested in the baptism ceremony in Geneva, the ongoing practices of Catholic baptism in neighbouring areas, and the similarities and tensions between these two rituals.

'This is an excellent study for anyone interested in the development of Reformed Protestant theology in a practical setting.' The Journal of Ecclesiastical History 'This is an excellent study for anyone interested in the impact of practical issues of society, culture and politics on the formation not only of theological views but also on the implementation of that theology in practice.' History 'This work should be read by students of Early Modern history and the theology of the time.' Colloquium 'In Infant Baptism in Reformation Geneva, Karen Spierling successfully negotiates the boundaries of a number of historiographical traditions and concerns, and presents a handsomely produced volume... Generally, this is a reliable and valuable study providing a good analysis of a number of archival data regarding baptismal issues and infractions that presented a not trivial challenge to the consolidation of Reformation Geneva.' Sixteenth Century Journal 'This is fascinating study that adds greatly to the understanding of the practice of infant baptism in Calvin's Geneva...' Calvin Theological Journal
