A deeply intimate look at a sikh family in turmoil
By haru
Khushwant Singh's genius is in plain view. This is a story of a Sikh family in the days before India's independence. The father is a minor official, a loyal servant of the British. The son is a hot blooded young revolutionary, but emotionally still a child. I Shall Not Hear The Nightingale gives the reader a window into the world of this family caught up in changing times and the turmoil they endure. It is a unique look at the relationship of the British masters with those Indians who were loyal to them, at the unravelling of that relationship, and at the heartbreaking devastation it brought to the families of Punjab.
This book is a must read for those interested in Indian history, culture, and psyche. All Britishers, Indians and Pakistanis should read it, as should students of the social impact of decolonization.

Khushwant is the man
By A Customer
Like Train to Pakistan, this book explores a side of Indias history that was very very painful. It is a towering achievement in storytelling, and is a compulsively readable book. Khushwant Singh is a well known Delhi based journalist who views India with an unflinching eye, and populates his stories with utterly believable characters and situations. There is much tragedy, and much humour throughout the book. Do not be surprised if you shed a tear reading this one.

A slow start but ultimately satisfying
By gbmillion
A slow start, but quite satisfying. Wonderful development of characters. The usual Khushwant treatment of dysfunctional Indian family life and interesting perspective on politics of the period before Independence. None of the buffoonery or humour of Khushwant's other works. But all the insight and sensitivity is there. If you're a fan you can't pass over this one.

Suicide of the West: An Essay on the Meaning and Destiny of Liberalism, by James Burnham

James Burnham’s 1964 classic, Suicide of the West, remains a startling account on the nature of the modern era. It offers a profound, in depth analysis of what is happening in the world today by putting into focus the intangible, often vague doctrine of American liberalism. It parallels the loosely defined liberal ideology rampant in American government and institutions, with the flow, ebb, growth, climax and the eventual decline and death of both ancient and modern civilizations.

Its author maintains that western suicidal tendencies lie not so much in the lack of resources or military power, but through an erosion of intellectual, moral, and spiritual factors abundant in modern western society and the mainstay of liberal psychology.

Devastating in its relentless dissection of the liberal syndrome, this book will lead many liberals to painful self-examination, buttress the thinking conservative’s viewpoint, and incite others, no doubt, to infuriation. None can ignore it.

Review
''This somber, brilliantly written book attempts to fix the blame for the suicidal 'contraction of the West' over the last fifty years upon Liberalism, chiefly in the United States . . . It is at the same time a venture into the philosophy of history and an indictment of those responsible for the present disastrous plight of once triumphant Western civilization.'' --National Review

Burnham, with echoes in Orwell and Lewis
By Richard L. Centner
Despite its age, this 1964 work holds up extremely well, offering an insightful analysis of modern Liberalism's appeal and its inherent flaws. With the benefit of hindsight it's almost a key to understanding how the years immediately prior to, and following, WWII saw so much interest in totalitarianism marching under the flag of liberalism. Burnham's book, and those of George Orwell for example, demonstrate why so many used idealistic words to mask totalitarian goals and platforms. Studying the political analytical works from this period are a worthwhile exercise for education and for inoculation against the evil movements that revisit humanity periodically and to remind us that C.S. Lewis was correct when he observed, "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." It seems to me that Liberals, more than any other political faction, insist on telling the electorate how good for the citizenry its decisions are.

Violating these principals is much like trying to add one and one to make three

Tyranny is the Legacy of a Nation Without God
Rodolf W. Velicky

Education does not make an intellectual nor does an intellectual make truth. In the 1960's a cultural revolution, grounded in the philosophies of European Age of Enlightened thinking reached our Nation as the common knowledge of intellectuals; declaring that the world's Christian heritage is a manifestation of superstitious ignorance. Overnight, virtually everyone claiming the status of an educated modern suddenly became an intellectual with the freedom to create a vision of reality providing a permissive moral order defining truth as a variable, limited only by a political correctness, encouraged and legalized by political power. Prior to this intellectual revolution truth was simply a fact that conformed with reality. Under this new paradigm, truth becomes a versatile construct, developed for the convenience and advantage of political power. Modernism’s call to Multiculturalism, Religious Diversity and Moral Relativism rejects the law of cause and effect and the law of non-contradiction along with the nature of justice that every child know instinctively by the time he reaches the age of seven, when the Church would prepare him for Holy Communion with God. Violating these principals is much like trying to add one and one to make three. It is impossible unless the mind is conditioned in double-think to achieve a predisposed result. When motives are taken into consideration, this is the definition of lying and when governments participate in the promotion of such lies, you can bet your last dollar that the Common Man’s constitutional freedoms are the target. This is an example of “Creative Ignorance” that revealed the relationship[s] of contempt, held by pseudo-Intellectuals for the common man; his rights to self-governance and the grounding of these rights found in the faith, hope and love of God, as proclaimed and defended by the Catholic Church, consistently for two thousand years. Modern snobs, pretending to an intellectualism in support of ignorance are deserving of ridicule for allowing their passions to think for them, under the legal and public pressure of political correctness. Sexual license and crumbs from the table of political power come at the extremely high price of our democratic freedoms within this life and, more than likely, an eternal regret for a life lived selfishly.

America’s Cultural Revolution is not and never has been a search for truth. Man is a social animal, dependent on each other for survival, however he dies as an individual and in justice should answer for how this life was lived. There always have been Culture Wars designed to organize a segment of the population to prey upon the rest of Mankind for pleasure and profit. This modern attempt is a brilliant manufactured excuse to deny the justice owed individually and collectively to Mankind, as grounded in the doctrines of the Catholic Church and hinted at in our Nation’s Declaration of Independence—allowing individuals and governments to Choose a world-view as if the universe were designed for one's personal pleasure and comfort. Modernism has provided a self-serving excuse for the pompous autonomous individual to feast at the table of political power under the security of public law and public approval. America’s Cultural Revolution is a creation of a dog-eat-dog world in which there is no one to trust or love but ones self—a world in which Culture functions as a vulture feeding on the carrion of Western Civilization; symbolized as a snake feeding on its own tail.
My life experiences, examined through the simple common sense of a common man, revealed that intellectual genius has absolutely no relationship to mankind's hope for happiness. This mysterious thing called happiness is the driving force for human existence—everyone wants it, however, if its true nature is not recognized substitutes can result only in misery and unhappiness. Instinctively, every-man comprehends God-like attributes of divinity within himself, manifested as the gift of intellect and free-will. If this gift is to be appreciated properly it must be loved correctly: that is with a love for the Gift-Giver that must be shared with others with the same generosity it has been received. It follows if there is any reality to the spiritual concept of happiness it must be locked into the nature of love that can only be received if freely given away. The hope of being happy is unobtainable when love is turned inward by the self into the self. This insight is experienced as Common Sense and is an instinctive inheritance of the common man, passed on generation to generation through the traditions of the family structure where the concept of sacrificial love can be nurtured to become the foundation for happiness to the degree possible in this world.

When the common man and these traditions are held in contempt, denigrated and mocked by a snobbish culture it turns this concept of love into hate and can only be grounded on the foundation of creative stupidity intended for a devious purpose. The consequences are so disastrous for human kind that every civilization throughout the history of the world that have pursued such philosophies have all come to an ignoble end. America's cultural revolution of the 1960's is not the product of any reasoned system of logic; it is a pseudo-religious belief, grounded on ancient Pantheism or Atheistic permissiveness; modernized with a facade of pseudo-science on a foundation of modern psychology, euphemisms and philosophical double-speak for which no one is willing or able to provide a reasonable explanation.

The rules of logic, as developed in Platonic philosophy and used in Catholic Theology must be undermined to persuade the gullible that science has made the existence of God unnecessary for explaining ours. This is an intentional dumbing down of the culture by those with the talent, intent and opportunity to do so. The concept of happiness and God's unconditional love for mankind is inexplicable without His revelation of Himself as one God in three Persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is a deep mystery, examined with the same logic science uses to penetrate physical mysteries such as light simultaneously being a particle and wave; as strong, weak and gravitational forces are postulated to deal with mysteries of time, space and the singularity of the universe at its beginning. Subverting the rules of logic to deny the existence of God destroys the tools of reasoned thinking and the road to science.

As I continue to reflect on the concept of Love I recall Jesus' command to, Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect and Love one another as I Love you. These statements define an awesome relationship between God and Man; especially when it is realized that God is offering to share His divinity with us. In John 17; 21-22 Jesus says, I pray not only for them [the Apostles] but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they all may be one, as you Father, are in me and I in you, THAT THEY ALSO MAY BE IN US.... This relationship is grounded on God's ineffable Love for Man: a Love that is reflected in the relationship among three persons in God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. So that Pope Benedict XVI can say with authority, God is Love and has Loved Mankind into existence.

Modernism is the antithesis of sacrificial love. Whatever it wishes to call itself, that is, Liberalism, Socialism, Secular Humanism, Communism or Fascism, it is an artificial construct designed to use the inherent selfish gullibility of mankind to enhance and perpetuate political power. When the substance of modern thought is boiled down to its essence there is nothing left but the autonomous individual—a poorly educated common man, intentionally persuaded to visualize the self as the center of the universe in order to become willing participants in a modern version of ancient paganism. The modern autonomous individual becomes a convert to a Secular Civil Religion by simply denying the reality of evil and redefining vices as virtues, thereby transferring the moral authority of God to themselves under the control of political power. Votes are substituted for prayers with the hope for all good things confiscated and distributed through that power to the faithful. It is a false religion grounded on wishful thinking that reinvents ancient pantheism flavored with a dose of atheism to deify each pompous ego with the authority to define the meaning and purpose for ones personal existence. Modernism is a fantasy grounded on wishful thinking allowing the ego to worship The Self in a no holds barred competition with all other Selves—a recipe for anarchy and barbarism, a universal divisiveness of all against all, that is noticeably accelerating toward this logical end around the world and in our Nation. There is no Happiness, in this world or the next, for winners or losers driven by selfishness, envy and hate, through a world-view well described as a snake feeding on its own tail.

Modernism has an extremely long history of failures and disasters for humanity. It began with the Renascence about five hundred years ago. It was followed by a Post-renascence era that gave us the Reformation, the Age of Enlightenment, the French Revolution, World War I & II, Fascism, Communism, the Cold War and a cowardice that allows today's Islamic Terrorism. The common denominator among all these roads to Utopia is the belief among pseudo-Intellectuals that it is possible to make truth and with a good line of bulls... to restore the absolute power enjoyed by ruling classes throughout the ages. The fruits of these ideologies are and always have been a disaster for the common man and as always the intelligentsia have given him evermore clever ways to suffer evil, experienced as reality under the misnomer social justice.

The autonomous individual promoting a world defined by Moral Relativism, Multiculturalism and Religious Diversity without an intellectual rationale for doing so is setting up the world for Political Tyranny. Digesting evil to justify personal lusts fosters a world of chaos that can only be controlled by economic coercion and physical force—a legacy of oppression defined as Tyranny.

By Jeffrey N. Mccollum
Written in the 1960's, this book has a contemporary feel to it. (Since I was in college in the 60's examples which are familiar to me may not be so familiar to younger readers but they are still relevant.) This is the clearest explication of the liberal/progressive ideology that I have read. Although I disagree with much of what President Obama has done, I put this book down feeling that I understood his actions as consistent with the ideology described by Burnham. Secretary Clinton seems cut from the same cloth. By laying out the left's ideology, Burnham helped me get clearer on my own which are center-right to libertarian.

"...an extremely good read...a productive mine of information...laced liberally with humour, human observation and practical examples..." (Plant Talk, May 2004)

From the Back Cover
Advance Praise for Medical Botany . . .

–Mark Blumenthal
Founder and Executive Director of American Botanical Council and Editor of HerbalGram

"The first edition of Medical Botany is one of the most used references on my bookshelf and helped to shape my view of world medicine. This new edition has been completely updated, but retains the extensive research and the well-written background of the original. It will be a valued resource through the rest of my professional career."
–Ron Hobbs, ND, Adjunct Basic Science Faculty, Bastyr University

"Medical Botany is a labor of love by two of the world’s foremost ethnobotanists. As was the first edition, this will be a classic reference and text, as well as extremely enjoyable reading for a variety of audiences."
–Samuel W. Page, World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland

This fascinating approach illustrates how plants through the ages have affected human health. It combines scientific information in human physiology, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, and ethnobotany, and intertwines these data with a variety of colorful stories and anecdotes–from Socrates’ fatal use of hemlock to the evolution of such pharmaceuticals as digitalis, taxol, and lovastatin and botanicals, including Echinacea, Ginkgo, St. John’s wort, and ginseng.

Richly illustrated and expanded, this revised edition addresses the injurious, remedial, and psychoactive properties of thousands of plants, fungi, and microorganisms. Each chapter focuses on a body system and thoroughly discusses how pharmaceuticals, botanicals, and dietary supplements affect its function in both normal and disease states. Mindful that the ultimate goal of integrative medicine is to optimize the worth of all types of treatment approaches, this edition provides the practitioner, patient, and public at large with information regarding the current state of research and treatment practices in this expanding field.

Aeromedical Psychology, by Gary G. Kay, Carrie H. Kennedy

Aeromedical psychology is that branch of psychology pertaining to the assessment, selection and evaluation of aviation personnel. This book, Aeromedical Psychology, is designed to provide the means for a variety of clinicians to carry out sound assessment and selection procedures, perform informed evaluations and make subsequent recommendations regarding flight status and treatment strategies geared to the aviation environment. To facilitate a dynamic understanding of the field, the book emphasizes an integration of applications and theory, case examples and research. The book is divided into three parts. The first presents assessment and selection procedures for aviation personnel (i.e. air traffic controllers, flight officers and pilots) and astronauts and the many ways in which both psychologists and psychiatrists are involved in these roles. In the second part, the waiver standards put forth by both the FAA and the various branches of the military are presented, as well as the waiver decision process. Clinical issues unique to aviation - notably fear of flying, motivation to fly and airsickness - are addressed, as well as possible courses of intervention, treatment and disposition. In the final part, more specialized issues pertaining to aeromedical psychology are dealt with, namely the psychopharmacological research and regulations applicable to recreational pilots and aviation personnel, managing the aftermath of aviation mishaps and the psychologist's role in accident investigations.

Review
Aeromedical Psychology sets out to present a guide to this field and to the growing role of aeromedical psychologists and in my opinion achieves its goal very well. This book, one of a kind, is well written, reads easily and will be very useful not only to psychologists and flight surgeons, but to any member of the aviation industry interested in human factors, crew support and flight safety. --Claude Thibeault MD, Past President, Aerospace Medical Association and Past President, International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine, Canada

This is the first book that I am aware of that was written to explain the specifics of the specialty of Aviation Psychology. I found it to be very accurate in how the specialty functions in civil aviation and feel it is a "must have" for any clinical psychologist who may be asked to see a flight crew member. --Warren S. Silberman, Aviation Certification Services, LLC, USA

By compiling such an impressive group of internationally recognized authors, Doctors Kennedy and Kay have produced a much-needed volume that comprehensively covers both clinical and non-clinical aspects of Aeromedical Psychology. This text is destined to become the standard reference for aeromedical specialists regardless of their professional backgrounds. The chapters on selection, assessment, substance abuse, motivation to fly, airsickness, fatigue and aging were particularly noteworthy. --Jeffrey L. Moore, Navy Medicine Operational Training Center, USA

Much of the well-written and easy to read content, would help the world aviation psychology family come together and form much needed common ground in standardisation and regulation. I therefore commend this book to be read by all those concerned and interested in harmonisation, across the international aviation medical and psychological spectrum. --Aerospace October 2014

The Goto Volume on Aeromedical Psychology
By Yossef S. Ben-Porath
Kennedy and Kay provide a rich, up-to-date edited volume; a valuable resource for mental health professionals involved in the various aspects of aeromedical psychology. I particularly enjoyed the chapters that survey the evolution of the field, from its pioneering history to contemporary practice. Other chapters range from ones providing comprehensive coverage of the scholarly foundations of the field to others rich with practical experience and guidance. This is, and will be for some time the goto volume on aeromedical psychology.

By Todd P. Hubbard
This wonderful collection of chapters on the varied subjects beneath the umbrella of aeromedical psychology, takes us further into the issues faced by the military than their civilian counterparts. More has been written on commercial aviation, as regards psychology assessment and pilot selection, but little has been presented from the military side. Many of the authors participating in this book are still active service men and women, from several of the armed forces in the U.S. This adds relevance to the discussion. And what they share can't be found elsewhere, at least outside military circles. I feel as though I'm front row center on everything being shared. I use the text in my Aviation Mental Health course at the University of Oklahoma. Nicely done!

an excellent survey of Qing dynasty politics
By razetheladder
This is an excellent introduction to politics and structural change during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). In accessible and engaging prose, Wakeman concentrates on how power was organized and what led the most prosperous and perhaps most powerful country in the world to collapse into rebellion and foreign domination before finally breaking apart under warlord rule.
Wakeman begins with a useful survey of the class structure of imperial Chinese society: peasants, gentry, merchants, and state. He then briefly describes the rise of the Manchus, their inauguration of the Qing dynasty, and the increasing power of the state under the early emperors. Wakeman devotes the second half of the book to Western imperialism, internal rebellion, and the ultimately futile efforts made by the central government to maintain its control. Woven into this narrative is a description of how the changing institutional basis of the state eventually gave rise to independent local centers of political and military power, dooming the Qing dynasty.
If you are looking for a quick, coherent, and well-written survey of Qing politics, this is your book. What the book does not cover is social or (for the most part) economic history. The lives of women and the poor are almost totally absent, and the momentous changes in traditional Chinese culture are rarely explored. While this leaves important gaps in the narrative, Wakeman's approach is far preferable to those textbook writers who seek to include everything but succeed only in sucking the life from their subject. Yet neither does Wakeman stray too far into the realm of personalities: he is able to keep his material lively even while laying out an argument based primarily on structural explanations. This is a service to both the reader and the history.

Imperial China in it's most defining hour
By Daniel Stroup
This book can be divided into two broad sections. In order to develop a background for his discussion of the Qing dynasty and reasons contributing to its demise, Wakeman, in the first section sketches the major social players of the time: the peasantry, the gentry, and the merchants.
The second section, which takes up a majority of the book is concerned with an outline history of the Qing dynasty - from the rise in Manchu power, their conquering of China, their subsequent rule and their ultimate fall.
Although the book is brief, only 256 pages (including notes), it is refreshing in its lucid explinations on why the Qing dynasty fell. It places the blame on a combination of internal and external conditions that had been reshaping Chinese society throughout the late 1700's and 1800's.
However, most of the book's emphasis is placed on the last sixty years of the dynasty (1850-1910). The bulk of the argument considers the Taiping rebellion(1850-1864) as being the catalyst that set in motion a series of events such as attempts at military, political, economic, and educational reforms, along with the growth in the local gentry. Wakeman considers this growth in gentry power vis-a-vis the central authorities the raison d'e^tre that brought down the Qing dynasty and altered the fundamental traditional relationships within Chinese society.

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews The Fall of Imp. China
By A Customer
Frederic Wakeman Jr.'s book, "The Fall of Imperial China" is the first of a series of of books on China which were published in 1974. This series has served as a standard survey text in a number of college undergraduate and graduate level classes on China.
"The Fall of Imperial China" will provide some sketchy background on China before the Ch'ing (Manchu) Dynasty (1644-1911), but will deal mainly with with decline of China under the Ch'ing Dynasty. The book carries the story of Chinese history right up to the 1911 Chinese Revolution.
Although "The Fall of Imperial China" is a scholarly book, Wakefield's writing style is such that even a person without much education in Chinese history can pick up this book and read it with ease. This is an enjoyable book to have in a personal library because it is so well indexed.

You Are Not a Stranger Here: Stories, by Adam Haslett

In his bestselling and lavishly praised first book of stories, Adam Haslett, author of Imagine Me Gone, explores lives that appear shuttered by loss and discovers entire worlds hidden inside them. The impact is at once harrowing and thrilling.

An elderly inventor, burning with manic creativity, tries to reconcile with his estranged gay son. A bereaved boy draws a thuggish classmate into a relationship of escalating guilt and violence. A genteel middle-aged woman, a long-time resident of a psychiatric hospital, becomes the confidante of a lovelorn teenaged volunteer. Told with Chekhovian restraint and compassion, and conveying both the sorrow of life and the courage with which people rise to meet it, You Are Not a Stranger Here is a triumph of storytelling.

Amazon.com Review
In his debut story collection, You Are Not a Stranger Here, Adam Haslett drags into the light subjects often left in the cellar. Most of his stories are told from the viewpoint of the mentally ill (though one, "The Good Doctor," shows us madness from a caregiver's perspective). The rest of the stories deal with closeted homosexuality: boys who are just learning their identity, men who have never come to terms with it. Haslett is an enormously compassionate writer, and shows a lovely, plain-written acuity about his people. His writing is a convincing inside job--he never romanticizes or oversimplifies. In "The Volunteer," an old woman at a care facility is haunted by the voice of an ancestress named Hester: "For more than two decades, Elizabeth Maynard has done exactly as she is told and the voice of Hester, which has cost her so much, comes only quietly and intermittently. It is a negative sort of achievement, she thinks, to have spent a life warding something off."

Haslett has a gift for writing quietly about sensational topics: men cruising each other in the park at night; an abusive, self-hating relationship between two adolescent boys. The stories can get a bit too fancy: the writer can't resist the ironic twist or the surprise ending. Still, this is a beautifully written collection that's as heartfelt as it is intelligent. --Claire Dederer

From Publishers Weekly
In this affecting debut collection, Yale Law School student Haslett explores the complex phenomena of depression and mental illness, drawing a powerful connection between those who suffer and those who attempt to alleviate that suffering. In "The Good Doctor," Frank, a young M.D., goes out of his way to discover the origin of his patient's illness, only to learn of both her untreatable pain and his own fears and regrets: "The fact was he still felt like a sponge, absorbing the pain of the people he listened to." In "The Beginnings of Grief," suffering becomes a way of healing when a teenager coming to terms with both his homosexuality and his parents' sudden deaths seeks connection wherever he can find it, even in the pain inflicted by a classmate's violence. Often, Haslett convincingly interweaves the perspectives and lives of seemingly disparate individuals. In "The Volunteer," a teenager's awkward incomprehension in the face of his first sexual encounter bizarrely coincides with the breakdown of a schizophrenic woman he visits after school. Not all of the stories are charged with this kind of emotional complexity, however, and some tend toward the sentimental, as does "The Storyteller," in which the clinically depressed Paul, who feels himself to be nothing but a burden to his wife, Ellen, rediscovers his vitality in a chance encounter with an elderly woman and her dying son. Though the thematic similarity of many of the stories dulls their startling initial impact, this is a strikingly assured first effort.

From Library Journal
Those setting collection policy in public libraries are often forced to base their decisions on genre alone and will buy a detective novel, for instance, at the expense of a collection of short stories, especially one by a first-time author. Haslett's debut shows what is wrong with this approach. Courageous and compelling as any in today's fiction, the despairing characters in these nine stories are all related to someone who has left or will leave them, usually owing to mental illness. In "Divination," for instance, a sensitive boy reflects on the precise moment when he became alienated from his family. In "Notes to My Biographer," the narrator, in a burst of manic impulsion, decides to visit a son he has not seen in years. His irascible sense of humor propels the story until we learn that his son treats his inherited disease with medication that the father won't ingest; reconciliation is only possible if the son stops taking his. Such uncompromising and realistic representations of depression and its symptoms are commendable. Too often, the sufferers' loved ones are depicted with lugubrious sobbing, but the narratives move forward with few detours, and readers will turn the pages accordingly. Strongly recommended for mid- and large-sized public libraries and academic literary collections. Edward Keane, Long Island Univ. Lib., Brooklyn, NY

A brilliat debut collection of stories from a new American master
By Bruce Payne
This collection of stories was Adam Haslett's debut - and was a National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize finalist. Haslett's novel, IMAGINE ME GONE, is one of the best three books of I have read this year. This is also in that top three. (The third is Bryan Stevenson's JUST MERCY.)

The stories are a stunning array of damaged people, unlike any I have read before. An orphaned teenage boy engages the school bully in an erotic pas-de-deux of anger and self-loathing. An elderly woman from a prominent family, long institutionalized, befriends an unhappy high school student, bringing warmth to both their tattered lives. An unmarried brother and sister share their family's oppressive house, and their intertwined romantic failures, eating dinner while their hopes erode.

In each tale, Haslett's virtuoso writing brings vivid life to these unhappy people, and the odd measures that they take to get by from day to day.

Reading this on the train, I was utterly unaware that we had reached our destination until the conductor gently drew my attention. Thank heavens we live at the end of the line, or I would have completely missed my station! These stories are utterly absorbing, capitivating jewels with facets of dread and loneliness and even a bit of hope.

Adam Haslett is a contemporary American master. I do not say such things lightly.

The Very Best Short Stories
By Foster Corbin
I read this book of short stories last fall and am still amazed at how good they are. I have read "The Good Doctor" three times. It is as good a short story as I have ever read. The writer manages to say more in about 20 pages than many modern fiction writers say in hundreds of pages if ever. In this somber, heartwrenching story, a hung-over young doctor from a county clinic visits a patient out on the prairie, a forty-four-year-old woman suffering from depression. Neither the young doctor nor the reader is ready for what he discovers. I literally gasped out loud when I discovered how this woman lost all her fingers on one hand. Reading this story was a first for me. I do not believe any short story (only a few novels) had ever made me weep. This story did. So much going on here. The young doctor tries so hard, but we have to ask just how "good" he is. Many of us have had the sad experience of having a "professional" not listening to us.
When I finished wonderful book, I had to ask: why on earth is this writer attending law school? Surely the world doesn't need another lawyer. We will never have too many fine writers!

Almost 5 stars...
By P. Meltzer
For readers like myself who make a dligent effort to finish any book they begin, a collection of short stories is always a scary proposition because if you don't like the first few, chances are you won't like any of them. By contrast, a full-blown novel can start out weak and get stronger. In the case of this collection, I'm happy to say that I thought the stories were mostly excellent. In fact I would have given it five stars, except that I felt that the last third of the stories were not quite up to the quality of the first two-thirds. I note that there were 4 themes that ran through these stories and most of the stories included at least 2 of the themes if not more. They are, in no particular order: 1. Homosexuality--3 stories. 2. Mental problems--5 stories. 3. Depression--5 stories. 4. Believing oneself or another to be near death, whether or not in reality--4 stories. The mental illness and depression themes are related but not identical, because in several stories the characters have one quality but not the other. I realize that this gives the impression of the stories being relentlessly downbeat, but I do not mean to suggest that it is depressing to read the stories. As some have noted before me, the stories do linger in your mind long after you have finished them and reading the collection itself is not a depressing experience. I also like the way that many of the stories had what I would consider to be "small surprise" endings, not in the sense of happily ever afters or a shocking twist, but just something to make to think about the story a little longer.
