Spiritual, but not Religious: Understanding Unchurched America, by Robert C. Fuller

Nearly 40% of all Americans have no connection with organized religion. Yet many of these people, even though they might never step inside a house of worship, live profoundly spiritual lives. But what is the nature and value of unchurched spirituality in America? Is it a recent phenomenon, a New Age fad that will soon fade, or a long-standing and essential aspect of the American experience?
In Spiritual But Not Religious, Robert Fuller offers fascinating answers to these questions. He shows that alternative spiritual practices have a long and rich history in America, dating back to the colonial period, when church membership rarely exceeded 17% and interest in astrology, numerology, magic, and witchcraft ran high. Fuller traces such unchurched traditions into the mid-nineteenth century, when Americans responded enthusiastically to new philosophies such as Swedenborgianism, Transcendentalism, and mesmerism, right up to the current interest in meditation, channeling, divination, and a host of other unconventional spiritual practices. Throughout, Fuller argues that far from the flighty and narcissistic dilettantes they are often made out to be, unchurched spiritual seekers embrace a mature and dynamic set of basic beliefs. They focus on inner sources of spirituality and on this world rather than the afterlife; they believe in the accessibility of God and in the mind's untapped powers; they see a fundamental unity between science and religion and an equality between genders and races; and they are more willing to test their beliefs and change them when they prove untenable.
Timely, sweeping in its scope, and informed by a clear historical understanding, Spiritual But Not Religious offers fresh perspective on the growing numbers of Americans who find their spirituality outside the church.

From Publishers Weekly
Over the past 30 years, sociologists of religion have coined the phrase "spiritual seeker" to describe those who are unaffiliated with organized religion but who are nonetheless looking for ways to enhance their understanding of religious questions. Fuller (Alternative Medicine in American Religious Life) observes that these seekers differentiate between spirituality and religion, connecting the former with a privately expressed faith and the latter with the creeds and rituals publicly expressed in religious institutions. These "spiritual but not religious" individuals, Fuller writes, pick and choose elements from a variety of beliefs and practices as they construct an individualized spirituality. While many scholars regard this as a recent phenomenon, Fuller provides a historical survey of America's "nonecclesial religious history" to demonstrate that the impulse toward creating a uniquely personal spirituality has pervaded American religion since colonial times. He ranges over divination, astrology, witchcraft, angelology, Swedenborgianism, Emersonian transcendentalism, mesmerism, Elizabeth Clare Prophet's I AM movement, New Thought and New Age in order to show the historical roots of the fascination with the spiritual apart from the religious. Finally, he contends that the spirituality of the "unchurched" is slowly reshaping the faith of many members of mainstream religious organizations. While there are interesting moments here, notably his lively historical overviews, Fuller's thesis is old news, and he fails to address the growing number of seekers who are returning to religious organizations in search of tradition-oriented faith. Since Fuller's book describes an outdated religious scene, his main point is almost obsolete.

From Library Journal
In a work emblematic of the uniquely syncretic American psyche, Fuller (religious studies, Bradley Univ.) surveys the history and development of alternative spirituality in America. Making important distinctions between religion and spirituality and between religious thinking and biblical theology, Fuller quotes Paul Tillich, who also found that most of what happens in church isn't distinctively spiritual. Thus, spiritual Americans have always been those who seek "to find a language suitable for describing their encounters with the sacred." Offering a primer on alternative American religious history, Fuller focuses on mystical spiritualities, such as theosophy, alternative healing, channeling, 12-step programs, and Asian meditative practices. He finds some to be superficial and some to contain a more polished cultural vision, but nearly all speak to a single truth: American churches and religious institutions hold less and less authority in a time when so many avenues for personal spiritual renewal are available to everyday folk. In this readable text, which guides the reader to further research, Fuller views American religiosity as a "seeker spirituality," an argument borne out by our country's history of eclectic spiritual journeying. Very interesting
By AlexForrest
Fuller provides readers with a fascinating survey of spiritual movements through American history that took place largely beyond the pale of "organized religion." He presents a convincing case that the spiritual seeking and experiementation that we see in our own day is nothing new. Particular attention is given to common themes such as the pantheism and other Eastern influences, mesmerism and other psycological experiences, and individualism.
Fuller clearly has a point of view that will irk Christian readers - he certainly seems to applaud spirituality divorced from orthodox Christianity. But Christians who want to seriously engage their culture will find this book terribly interesting. We should be challenged to remember that our own faith should not be conventional and enslaved to the culture, but should be counter-cultural, life-changing, and authentic. Perhaps those who know Christ and have the SPirit within them should be more often characterized as spiritual but not religious.

Do Americans Still Believe in Religion?
By Bryan Carey
Quite frequently, when someone talks about religious life in America, it is common to hear news that sounds somewhat negative. "America is not quite as religious as was in the past", experts say. "They don't have the commitment to religious places of worship like they once did and they don't follow the strict moral code of their ancestors".
Author Robert Fuller is a professor of Religious Studies at Bradley University and he has studied extensively about this "flight" away from traditional religion. But what Fuller has found is that Americans are still believers in a higher being and they still consider themselves moral beings. The difference between now and then is that today, Americans tend to express their religious feelings in a more inward way, and they don't participate actively in organized religion. This is the new face of religion in America, and it is examined in this book, "Spiritual, but not Religious: Understanding unchurched America".
Fuller points out some revealing statistics that shows the movement of Americans away from tradition houses of worship and over to a more personal relationship with God. Americans don't like the standardized formula that is so prevalent in most churches. They want to express themselves in their own, unique way. And they want to rely more on the power of their own minds to get in touch with spiritual feelings.
Fuller writes mostly about the history of spirituality in America and the trends of the past two centuries that have gotten us where we are today. He doesn't dwell much on the present state of spirituality and why Americans are increasingly attracted to this as an alternative to traditional religion. This is one of the drawbacks of the book, in my opinion. It's good to know about the history and how we got where we are. But I would like to know more about the present- day spiritualists and why they feel so strongly about their mode of practice.
Fuller presents some good, thought- provoking material on the history of spirituality in America and what we can expect in the future. The nation is becoming more and more diverse all the time, and that includes diversity in religious beliefs as well as in cultural backgrounds. Churches will need to find more and more ways to accommodate these "drifters" who prefer their own method of religious practice to that of customary churches. If churches ignore this, Fuller predicts that they will continue to lose more and more members. Something must be done if American churches hope to grow and thrive in the new century.

An excellent resource
By A Customer
This book is an excellent resource for congregations reaching out to a wider community than their own worship community. Often it provides more questions than answers, but the book forces the reader to analyze how her or his congregation is responding to the needs of the 40% of Americans who have no connection with organized religion.
The author provides a comprehensive history of alternative spiritual practices, which many of us believe erroneously are new
to our society. For those of us who find our spirituality based in community worship, this book provides thought-provoking challenges to our beliefs while also providing insights into how people reach a mature level of spirituality outside conventional religions.
I read the introduction and first chapter, "The Emergence of Unchurched Traditions," in order, and then chapter subtitles such as,"The New Ecclecticism in American Religion," and "Psychological Spirituality," piqued my interest, and I skipped around in the book for further reading. I borrowed the book from a friend, but then I ordered my own copy so I could highlight sections and make notes on pages.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for ways to broaden their own spirituality and understanding of how and why people pursue a particular style of spirituality. I also recommend it to members of congregations who have a strong spirit of reaching out in unconventional ways to the larger community--possibly even to the unchurched.

One night. That’s all it was supposed to be. No strings. No complications.

Grace DeLeo had never been that girl. Relationships made her feel secure, and one night stands had no place in her life. All of that was smashed to pieces the second Logan sat down next to her.

Logan McFadden liked his no strings lifestyle. He loved his rules. Everything had a place, and there was no space for a relationship or feelings.

One night. That’s all it took to change things forever.

Grace De Leo was a relationship kind of a gal. Until she met Logan and decided to throw caution out of the window and be wild for one night. She knew her craziness was going to bring her pain and she regretted her actions as soon as the morning arrived. Now, how would she move on?

"I was stupid to let myself dream about a future with a man I had just met. He had been clear from the start. It was only the one night."

Logan McFadden was not looking for relationships. He had simple rules to never share last names and personal information with his affairs. Until he met Grace and she proved to be a temptation bigger than his set of rules. Were they fated to be together?
" I don't do perfect, and I don't do relationships. I'm not comfortable with them. They are too familiar."

Never Let Me Go had a good story flow, with no typo mistakes and good cohesion. Both main characters were interesting and it also had several promising secondary characters. The chemistry between characters was obvious and their passionate scenes were fun. The story hooked me enough, that I would have bought part two right now, if it were out yet.

Even though the main characters were compelling, I was unable to connect or relate with them. Their love story happened too fast, and if felt totally unreal for me.

I have already signed up for Ms. Gibson newsletter, so I will know when part two will come out. I'm looking forward to it, and to see how the little twist at the end will be resolved.

You may read this book, if you enjoy romantic novellas; you should read this book, if you like billionaire-type-of-love stories; you MUST read this book, if your heart becomes lighter at love at first sight tales!

Great beginning to a series
By T London
You are about to begin the story of Logan and Grace. This story will take place through a series of books and will introduce you a circle of family and friends as you proceed. For now though, I think Logan is all I need. Being not only a successful business man he is also probably one of the most stubborn sexy men I have read about in a long time, that is until Grace gets under his skin and infects his heart with emotions.

Logan really never had a childhood. Being raised by nannies and other paid servants his sister was all he really had. Now as a grown man running his own company, he looks back at his prior choices and has decided that love isn’t worth the risk. Besides when you are that rich no woman wants him for his heart and soul, they want him for his bank account. He has this crazy idea that he will never go after another woman, they will have to come to him and prove that they are worth his attention.

Grace grew up in a completely different environment. With two loving parents and three sisters that will fight anyone to protect each other, she used to view life as offering nothing but honesty and love, until she found out what betrayal was from her ex-boyfriend. Now she isn’t sure she can deal with any relationship that would break her heart again. She certainly will never allow herself to be involved with anyone that won’t be honest. When she hears about Logan’s past, she feels her heart break for him, but then when she begins to ask questions she finds herself up against a brick wall because Logan isn’t so forth coming with all of his past.

The author did a wonderful job at bringing two broken people together for one night and giving us the reality of what it will take to merge their hearts. Nothing is going to come easy when you have a woman who demands total transparency and honesty and a man who has secrets he carries that are not his to share. Each part of the story will be brought to you in short story/novella form, giving you enough to love at that moment and wanting more at the end. I think the author did a great job at taking such a small amount of words and pages to not only bring you into Logan and Grace’s story but to also allow you to become invested in the sisters and Logan’s friends lives as well. Make sure you check out this author and series. I think it will only get better as she goes because of the gradual build up in the story. I have a feeling before it is done we will all be wishing we were part of Grace and Logan’s family.

A great start to a new serial.
By diducky
Grace DeLeo hadn’t had good luck in the romance department and falling into sudden lust, and right away in bed, with Logan McFadden was totally out of the norm for her. Her sister Faith, who was happy to flit from one man to the next, was thrilled to see Grace step out of her self-imposed sex embargo but that quickly turned to concern. Grace went into her one-night stand with no illusion of forever ever after but in those few hours something changed. Unfortunately, it did not seem to change for Logan. They went their separate ways with no last names and definitely no contact information shared. Grace was stuck in limbo – she couldn’t get past that one night despite her sister’s attempts to coax her back into the social scene. With her sisters rallying around her, Grace is forced to make a decision. Would it be the right one?

I enjoyed this short novella, the first in the serial trilogy. It was a quick read and didn’t have all the details I may have liked but the tantalizing glimpses into both Grace and Logan’s past made me want to learn more. They both come with full sets of baggage and not all was revealed so this installment definitely has me looking forward to the next chapter in the series. I liked the main characters; they weren’t perfect and didn’t pretend to be. Grace’s sisters and Logan’s friends provided great support and insight into what made them tick. Well-written, the cliff-hanger took me from zero to wow in one page. How quickly things change in the world of a cliff-hanger novella! I’m off to find part two because I can’t be left here for long, I just can’t!

Eastern Approaches, by Fitzroy MacLean

This is the classic true adventure story of a man who by the pen, the sword and the diplomatic pouch influenced some of the most significant events of our era. Here Fitzroy Maclean recounts his extraordinary adventures in Soviet Central Asia, in the Western Desert, where he specialized in hair-raising commando-style raids behind enemy lines, and with Tito's partisans during the last months of the German occupation of Yugoslavia. An enthralling narrative, brilliantly told, "Eastern Approaches" is also a vivid personal view of episodes that have already become part of history.

An engaging history lesson I didn't know I needed
By yatlady
Fitzroy MacLean has an engaging, intelligent writing style that presents history as he experienced it in the most unlikely places. The first part of Eastern Approaches are MacLean's first diplomatic experiences and clever unofficial travels to off-the-map Russian towns and cities before WWII. Enlightening and downright funny. There is a lot to learn about these mysterious places and reckless train travel during that era.

MacLean then shifts to a description of Stalin's political purges that is both detailed and personal. That's the key to this book -- his personal presentation of what he saw and heard, not just another history book.

He saves the second half of Eastern Approaches to detail his experiences during WWII in Yugoslavia and his diplomatic yet military association with Tito and the partisans. I thought I knew something about these events and about Tito but after reading Eastern Approaches I realized I had known nothing at all. I couldn't put this book down.

Excellent, If You Have Traveled by Train in Europe
By Robert K. Waitt Esq.
The dust cover exclaims a story that did not unfold as I expected. Instead, the first half of the book was about a British Embassy employee traveling by train through the Eastern European countries in the late 1930's. The descriptors were really enjoyable, as this was our early mode of travel when we initially made trips to Europe.
The second half of the book, about the Jugoslav (old spelling) resistance movement, amazed me because I had seen Movitone News about this during the war. But never did I realize the magnitude of the number of their men and women in the Resistance, and resources they were able to obtain to accomplish their goals. Especially under constant Italian and German actions against them. It was so unexpectedly strong, the Germans had to divert troops from other fronts to try to combat the inroads made by the Partisans...to the detriment of the German actions elsewhere.
Altogether, a great read.

Highly recommended, and not just for the military history enthusiast
By phoebus athanassiou
This is well and truly an exciting book. The part I enjoyed the most is the one providing an account of the author's travel adventured in Central Asia: this part is so eloquently written that the reader feels the urge to travel to those parts of the world and discover all that there is to see there. The author's account of the infamous Moscow trials in the late 1930's is also extremely interesting (indeed, it is well worth buying the book for the author's first hand impression of the Moscow trials, considering that he was one of the lucky few third party observers to physically attend the trials). The more 'military' component of the book will also be of interest, even if mostly for the military history enthusiast (and, possibly, less so for the general public). The author's account and assessment of Tito will no doubt also be of interest to many. Overall highly recommended.

Originally self-published in 1978, Once a Runner captures the essence of competitive running—and of athletic competition in general—and has become one of the most beloved sports novels ever published..

Inspired by the author’s experience as a collegiate champion, the story focuses on Quenton Cassidy, a competitive runner at fictional Southeastern University whose lifelong dream is to run a four-minute mile. He is less than a second away when the turmoil of the Vietnam War era intrudes into the staid recesses of his school’s athletic department. After he becomes involved in an athletes’ protest, Cassidy is suspended from his track team. Under the tutelage of his friend and mentor, Bruce Denton, a graduate student and former Olympic gold medalist, Cassidy gives up his scholarship, his girlfriend, and possibly his future to withdraw to a monastic retreat in the countryside and begin training for the race of his life against the greatest miler in history. .

A rare insider’s account of the incredibly intense lives of elite distance runners, Once a Runner is an inspiring, funny, and spot-on tale of one man’s quest to become a champion..

Pure excellence, but with a disclaimer
By Andrew
There are 87 other reviews here, so all I will do is offer the following breakdown for people interested in buying this book. Put yourself in one of these categories:

a) Competative runners: this is an increadible book, period. The best part about it is reading about a little tiny nuance in Quenton's running life and saying to yourself, "I know exactly what he's talking about, wow", which will happen literally hundreds of times. Your hopefully already-substantial appreciation for the sport will likely increase tenfold with this book.

b) The casual runner, recreational, or other athlete: this is an excellent book and is very highly reccomended. You probably will not appreciate it to it's fullest extent, but there are aspects of the story and how it is told that will be enjoyed by anyone with the capacity for excitement from sports or human physical endeavors.

c) The non-athlete: this book may not make sense to you. Not in the literary sense, but it may seem as though there is little direction in the story, and you might read it and then find yourself thinking that nothing interesting really happened, and you are not really to blame for this. There is still a good chance that you will find it enjoyable, but if you are looking for a piece of literature based on traditional merits (plot, character development, etc) there are likely better books out there for you to spend time on.

Clearly I thought this book was one of the best I've ever read. However, I hope this breakdown about who in particular might enjoy it the most was helpful.

So much more than just the best "running" novel of all time
By James Howe
Once a Runner has been described as the best running novel of all time - and I can't argue with that. However it is also so much more than just a running book. As a middle of the pack weekend warrior I've never experienced the elite levels of success described in the book, however it gives a great insight into what that would take, the complete engulfment of life by running and the highs and lows experienced along the way.

Parker however does a wonderful job in developing characters that are easily related to and understood so that even non-runners would be absorbed by the story. At points it was a little predictable however I still had more than enough times reading "just one more page..." to find out what happened next. A classic for all the right reasons.

What can you say about this classic? Full of ...
By D. Bond
What can you say about this classic? Full of the lore of running and runners in a fictional framework, it's a bit dated, but some intrinsic truths don't change.
