Here, the message is muddled. On one hand, he tells readers that inner peace should be their greatest goal, but, on the other hand, he offers techniques designed to attain more worldly objectives, like a new job. There's lots about meditating and chanting, and he supplies distillations from A Course in Miracles, but ultimately, the volume veers close to the low end of New Age gobbledygook. Still, Dyer's name and a marketing push are likely to generate requests. It is a must read!

I really enjoyed reading Manifest Your Destiny because there was so much information in there that I didn't know. It is an easy read and it held my attention from the beginning to the end. It is a must read for anyone seeking guidance on how to better manifest her/his desires! I highly recommend it!

About the Author

John Michael Greer (Western Maryland) has been a student of occult traditions and the unexplained for more than thirty years. In the following excerpt, author John Michael Greer explains that monsters have something valuable to teach us about ourselves and our world.

A thousand years ago, vampires and shapeshifters, spirits of the ancestors and spirits that were never human at all, intelligent beings with subtle bodies or none, were as much a matter of everyday life then as electricity is now.

But we know better nowadays, of course.

Don't we?

This book is based on the uncomfortable knowledge that we don't know better-that at least some of these entities had, and still have, a reality that goes beyond the limits of human imagination and human psychology. For most people nowadays, such ideas would be terrifying if they weren't so preposterous. Plenty of modern Americans believe that UFOs are spacecraft from other worlds and psychics can bend silverware with their minds-but the existence of vampires and werewolves? To make things worse, this book explores such beings from the standpoint of an equally discredited system of thought: the traditional lore of Western ceremonial magic, which has been denounced and derided by right-thinking folk ever since the end of the Renaissance.

The word "monster" comes from the Latin monstrum, "that which is shown forth or revealed." The same root also appears in the English word "demonstrate," and several less common words (such as "remonstrance") that share the same sense of revealing, disclosing, or displaying. In the original sense of the word, a monster is a revelation, something shown forth.

This may seem worlds away from the usual modern meaning of the word "monster"-a strange, frightening and supposedly mythical creature-but here, as elsewhere in the realm of monsters, appearances deceive. Certainly, monsters are strange, at least to those raised in modern ways of approaching the world. As we'll see, too, monsters have a great deal to do with the realm of myth, although this latter word (like "monster" itself) has older and deeper meanings that evade our modern habits of thought. The association between monsters and terror, too, has practical relevance, even when the creatures we call "monsters" fear us more than we fear them.

The myth, the terror, and the strangeness all have their roots in the nature of the realm of monsters and the monstrous-a world of revelations, where the hidden and the unknown show furtive glimpses of themselves. If we pay attention to them, monsters do have something to reveal. They show us the reality of the impossible, or of those things we label impossible; they point out that the world we think we live in, and the world we actually inhabit, may not be the same place at all.

A useful and insightful manual

I have to begin by saying that I’m a bit bias, I love Greer’s work and I find him to be a wonderful and intelligent author that rights with honesty and obviously knows his subject matter from personal practice.
Monsters, is a good primer and look over of many of the common, creatures and things which go bump in the night that a occult practioner may have the "ill" or "good" fortune (depending on your view) of coming across. He does it in a way which as always is backed by a long list of research he has done on each of the monsters, which is matched with a great bibliography in the back.
The biggest thing I liked about this book was his approach. He does not go hyper paranoid on us and tell the reader to lock himself in a protective circle and banish three times a day. As well as he doesn’t go the other way, especially when it comes to Fae, and get all Fluffy Bunny on us, he presents the Historical writings say, first hand and others experiences, along with Occult Theories and ways Of identifying and dealing with each category of creature.
At the end he also provides some good suggestions on how to go about investigating incidents, and dealing with them. As well as some great techniques for "handling" situations.
The only thing I would like to add is I would really love to see him right a second book to this, covering intermediate and advanced topics. One can hope!
In the end, this is a good and informative read, where you will definitely leave with greater knowledge and practices to boot!

Absolutely the best book I've read on the subject of "Monsters"

I've been interested in the subject of ghosts, fairies, vampires, and demons, etc. most of my life but I've found all other books on the topic to be very lacking in the theory behind the how's and why's of paranormal phenomena. I'm happy to finally find a book that gives plausible explanations for all sorts of supernatural beings.

Plausible at least from the perspective of the magically minded. Based on some of the other reviews, it seems like those that are...errr...uninitiated into the world beyond the material may not understand what Greer is discussing. However, if you have an open mind about the paranormal, I'd highly recommend this book. It goes far beyond merely describing the supernatural but actually attempts to explain it and gives good tips for how to protect yourself when the supposedly impossible happens.

One hell of a book and a must for Monster and Lore goers!

Very handy guide for avoiding vampires, capturing Bigfoot, how to handle ghosts, what types of spirits there are, how to identify the fae and more. Was the first book on the topic I read and it really helped me to get a good feel of the areas of magical creatures and understand that part of the world better. I'm not saying I want to go ghost busters on them spirits but I know the difference now between hauntings, replays and a friendly occupation. I didn't do much of the natural/ritual magic sections but it had some great suggestions for protection remedies using natural magic and ritual magic. I'd recommend as a great piratical guide. Greer's writing style is awesome too. Funny and easy to read, he tells it as is.

this textbook is pretty helpful but I think it helps alot to have ...

Recently started taking Japanese classes again.. this textbook is pretty helpful but I think it helps alot to have a teacher guide you through it and give supporting documents. In general though, they do a good job of providing pretty interesting dialog for each chapter. A lot more relatable than my old Japanese textbooks. There was one that comes in mind about a mom nagging the step sister about studying more and getting into a good school and lamenting over the fact that she came from a 'bimbo' (poor) family so she wanted to give her daughter more opportunities in life. Seriously.

Simple and Easy

I went through classes using the Nakama series for a year and half, and find that those textbooks were thick and expensive, however gave super in depth explanations as well as alternative uses of grammar. When I compare Nakama to Genki; I like Genki for its price, and explanations of the grammar. The explanations of Genki are short, but to the point (similar to "Japanese Sentences Patterns for Effective Communication"). It includes a fair amount of Kanji and vocabulary. Actually Genki includes grammar points omitted from Nakama and vice versa. One particular part I enjoyed were the short readings in the appendices.

I used this book at my local Japan America Society for 10 weeks, and when used with a good sensei can be just as effective as Nakama. Textbooks like Genki (and Nakama) are best used in the classroom setting because ultimately there will be gaps in what the textbook provides and what your initial logic (based on your native language) will attempt to tell you. However I think Nakama is better overall for the amount of Kanji, its explanations, and because Nakama 2 will propel the beginner far into the intermediate level somewhere around chapter 8 or 9. If you are considering buying this for self study I would advise against doing so.

This book is for beginners. Although it seems that some classes pass off the material as intermediate, it truly is beginner. Only once I finished Genki and moved onto "An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese" (which is the same series) would I consider an advance to an intermediate level. Hence the recommendation.

For me, this textbook makes great use as a reference because I need to double check things every now and then.

Great Japanese Language Text

I began studying Japanese language with the orange Genki book, four semesters ago. I find this the best text on the market. I am now entering my 5th semester and ready to take on the green book.

The book is laid out in an easy to follow style beginning with a dialogue, new vocabulary, and grammar points. In the last half of the chapter there are drills that help you with each grammar point. In the back there are kanji drills and other useful language phrases and situational tips. The text is clear and easy to follow. This is a comprehensive language course.

I highly recommend this text.

About the Author
Joseph F. McPartland is the nation's leading expert on the National Electrical Code, and the principal author of McGraw-Hill's National Electrical Code Handbook, and Handbook of Practical Electrical Design, 2d Ed. Brian J. McPartland is an electrical construction consultant and editor of Electrical Design and Installation magazine. He is a co-author of McGraw-Hill’s National Electrical Code Handbook. Steven P. McPartland is an engineer for GE/Northern Electrical Supply Company, and an instructor for the New Jersey State Apprenticeship Training Program. Jack E. Pullizzi is an assistant facilities engineer for AT&T Bell Laboratories and an instructor in electrical systems at Ocean County College. He is also a contributing editor to Electrical Contractor magazine.

Good but not as good as the handbook

I have both the calculations book by Brian McPartland and the NEC Handbook by Brian and his dad Joe. I prefer the handbook more, although you may want both. My problem with this book is that it was not proofed adequately for math errors and typos. I have found at least four computational errors in the examples.
I am not to impressed with this book because it does not take you too far beyond the examples already in the NEC or beyond the obvious. The explainations of why they are computing things the way they are (logic behind the computations) are all explained in the Handbook. Many of the examples are merely duplications of the handbook examples. If you want one good book, buy the Handbook. Don't waste money on the NEC handbooks published by NFPA. They merely waste space by quoting the NEC with some useless comments thrown in. McPartland is the only guy who has ever written a handbook worth having that goes in depth as to why the code is the way it is.

The development of energy law is becoming an urgent and expanding substantive law area in its own right having been long associated with the overall concepts of environmental law. We welcome the excellent new work from Edward Elgar Publishing Limited entitled “Carbon Pricing” which is a new volume in their “Critical Issues in Environmental Taxation” series.

Six people have edited this publication which comments on and expands the continuing and constructive global debate taking place on the price of energy in a legal, taxation and economic context.

The editors investigate the best models to design carbon pricing and the ways to utilize the financial outcomes in the best possible way to benefit society. The global community continues to witness a significant downward adjustment in the costs of fossil fuels as prices continue to fluctuate. The issues the editors identify are considered by some as possible negative implications for the future of our environment thus highlighting contemporary environmental and energy law issues.

So, with the serious implications of these negative developments across the world, it’s now emerging as a fundamental consideration for legal academics to comprehend and evaluate the benefits of a continued environmental sustainability by well-documented research. And the best independent publishing house available to undertake the task is Elgar who has risen massively to the occasion with this new piece of linked research.

It is rightly described by commentators as a discerning book which weighs up the current design of carbon taxes. The editors explore and examine consequential conclusions to the different taxation compositions as regulatory instruments which we currently have.

“Carbon Pricing”, as the title suggests, ranges over an array of overarching discussions throughout and the book concludes with the view that successful policies used by some countries are quite capable of being implemented in other jurisdictions with minimum new research and experimentation- we suspect that the missing link here is the requisite political will but that is really outside the realms of the academic discussion.

It is clearly an astute work which we think will be of great benefit to scholars, practitioners, forward-thinking politicians and policy makers alike with an interest in the fields as diverse as environmental law, environmental economics, sustainable development and taxation law.
