About the Author
Beth Chatto was born in 1923. Her influence as a gardener and plantswoman extends worldwide. Her guiding principle has always been the right plant for the right place. If this hardly sounds radical today, it is largely thanks to her work – when she first put her principle publicly into practice at her Unusual Plants stand at the Chelsea Flower Show in 1977 she brought about a quiet revolution in the gardening world. As well as creating her garden and nursery at Elmstead Market in Essex, she has written gardening classics including The Dry Garden (Dent, 1978), The Damp Garden (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1982), The Green Tapestry (Collins, 1995) and Drought-Resistant Planting (Frances Lincoln, 2000). She was created OBE in 2002 and also holds the Royal Horticultural Society’s Victoria Medal of Honour. Steven Wooster is a garden photographer and a graphic designer. He won the Garden Media Guild Award for his photographs in Beth Chatto’s Gravel Garden.

Fabulous well written book that can build a deeper understanding of undocumented immigration

I'm teaching this book in an introductory college class with fantastic results. It combines compelling personal stories of 10 undocumented immigrants with great historical and public policy discussions that helps my students understand the history of interconnections between Mexico and the US, the complex reasons people migrate and the effects of US immigration policies. It addresses one of the most contentious debates in America with the fairness, dignity and complexity it deserves. I would strongly recommend it for a range of classes -- It would work in introductory anthropology, ethnic studies, urban studies courses as well as in other courses that explore globalization, immigration and public policy. It's accessible enough for introductory students but not at all over-simplified. A perfect mix.

Coherent, Well-Researched Account and Analysis of a Group of Very Interesting People

I had this book assigned for a class, but once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. I even stayed up very very late to finish. The book follows a group of of normal guys and tells their stories as people without papers. It doesn't try to demonize or canonize them as saints. It only shows them as human beings trying to adapt and survive in a unique situation. Furthermore, there is no unnecessary victimization of the workers in this book. Rather, the author tries to show them as active agents with limited choices.
While the day-to-day personal narrative portions keep the reader very interested, these are interspersed among insightful sections of well-researched analysis and historical/political context.
I learned a lot from this book and I would recommend it highly to anyone who has even a small interest in immigration and the lives of immigrants.

a must-read on immigration

A friend of mine recommended this book, which is about undocumented immigration from the point of view of undocumented workers. I was skeptical, because I have no tolerance for political rhetoric, but this book is humanizing and easy to access. In fact, it reads sort of like a novel, in that it draws you in with personal stories, but it also seems to be well-researched with smart political and historical analysis. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more information about migration in the United States. I learned more about undocumented migration from reading this book than I have from following the news for the last five years.

Not even close, and there are much better out there.

This book covers the topics of the new exam, technically, but it misses the mark badly on what the new questions are like. Page through the previews Amazon has here, and you'll see example problems that are pure calculation--"Find the speed of..." "Find the acceleration..." But that's not the true nature of the new test at all. On the AP Physics 1 exam, you can expect questions closer to:

"You throw a ball of mass m up at speed v. It reaches a height of h before it starts to come down. What could you change in order to make the ball reach a height of 2h before coming down? a) Throw the ball twice as fast. b) Throw the ball sqrt(2) times as fast. c) Throw a ball that is half as massive at the same speed v. d) Throw the ball 4 times as fast."

Note what you don't see as any of the options: a solution in meters per second (or any other unit, for that matter). Contrast this to the problems you see in the previews. You don't have to take my word (or anyone else's, for that matter), by the way; College Board released several sample physics problems on their website. Look them over and look at the ones in this book; they're not even close.

So although you can get a glimpse at the topics covered in this book, and read what the definition of momentum is and such, the practice problems included here are beyond misleading and shouldn't be used for AP Physics 1 at all. The McGraw Hill guide hits much closer to the mark, as should the as-yet-unreleased Barrons and Princeton Review guides. And if you'd prefer a textbook full of problems that resemble the new course material, check out Knight-Jones-Field's 3rd edition (pink, water drop on cover) or Etkina-VanHuevelen's 1st edition (bicycle wheel on cover). As well, old Cutnell-Johnson textbooks (pre-8th edition) are cheap to get used copies of nowadays and contain some concept-first-problem-second "group solving" problems at the end of each chapter that are similar to the Qualitative-Quantitative Reasoning questions (QQR) that will show up in the short answer section of the new exam.

Any one of these options would be a much better source for the new exam than this horrible book that puts "AP Physics 1" in the title but contains none of the new-style questions.

Wish I would have had this in engineering school

After graduating from engineering school and working in the industry for a number of years, I'm interesting seeing how new textbooks present physics concepts to see if I would have benefited from their teaching approach. I feel the methods presented in this book would have better helped me in my time as a student. I always learned the best in deconstructing the example problems. In this book you have a huge number of problems to learn from. I'd give this book my thumbs up.

Kem Nunn's Homerun

Kem Nunn is not as prolific as a James Patterson(frequently co-authored) or a Michael Connelly,churning out a book annually or biannually. This is a calculated, measured,researched,mystery novel.At times, laugh-out loud funny. This novel is a microcosm of life in the second decade of the 2000's.Addressing divorce,psychotherapy,bureaucracy and America's ever changing ethnic landscape.Peeling back layers of when the formerly well-heeled find themselves down at the heels.Much like Mr.Nunn's other novels,e.g.Tijuana Straits,the locales(Cali/Mex Border v. San Francisco)are as much characters, in these novels, as well as the main protagonists Fahey&Chance,respectively.For the money,Mr.Nunn's releases are a must read.There isn't a writer I've read who understands the complexities and undercurrents of the male psyche and what men will do to redeem themselves for their transgressions.Simply said,This novel is worth your time and money.

In the tradition of Robert Stone

I love the story line of an American male getting himself in over his head. Embracing noir but not limited by it, Nun guides the reader to an exciting conclusion, but the protagonist has no guide, except a dysfunctional paramilitary under life hero, a shady antiques dealer and the classic office assistant. The hero is a sinner and the reader is a voyeur. It's a train wreck, page by page. Dr. Chance, who you might catch yourself thinking is a hapless detective rather than a nueropsychiatrist, lets himself descend into a bottomless pit, populated by evil characters, and in a twist that achieves some kind of grandeur, the anti-hero Blackstone surprises us all. This is a good story well told. It's not a work of location fiction, as were Dogs of Winter and even Tijuana Straights, but the characters are superb.

Not one I would recommend

I'm kind of blown away by all of the five star reviews on here. My reaction to CHANCE was basically, "meh". I came close to not finishing it, and its definitely not one I would recommend to a friend. I gave it three stars, because even though I didn't really love the story, Kem Nunn is obviously a talented writer. Much like his other books, the characters are fascinating and I love how bits of them are revealed over the course of the story. The characters of Dr. Chance and Big D in particular are what kept me going through this book. Every time I was ready to bail out, something would happen with those two that kept me reading.

I just read TAPPING THE SOURCE a week or two ago, and that book truly was a five star novel from start to finish. Maybe reading them back to back, I was more disappointed by CHANCE than some other readers.

So what specifically didn't I like about the book? For starters, just from my personal taste, there are three plot devices that I hate: time travel, amnesia and split personalities. This book unfortunately involves the last one, and I'm not sure what it really adds to the story. My bigger criticism though is that the story just seemed to go out of focus so much. There is a pretty clear and sometimes interesting plot in here involving a misguided love interest and a dangerous bad cop/husband. I think if the book had stayed with that story more clearly it would have been more enjoyable. Instead it strays at times into musings or events happen in unclear ways.

Anyway, its not a bad book, but in all honesty I've read many better novels lately, and this isn't one I would be quick to recommend to anyone.

Loads of Fun

LIke all the "Zack Files," this one is just tons of fun. I gave it to a fourth grader who resisted reading, and now I can't get him to give me my book back! Dan Greenburg has a wonderful ear for the way children think and talk. Well, how boys do, at any rate. I haven't found that girls get as big a kick out of it. But he creates preposterous situations and then resolves them, always with the sympathetic help (or, at least, noninterference) of the divorced Dad (what a surprise.).

Great story!

My first grader loves the Zach Files series! He laughs out loud as I read to him. This was a great one for my son who has begun to have his share of little stretches of truth. He really enjoyed the story and learned a bit about the enjoyment of participating in a science fair too.

Zack Files Are a BIG Hit!

I have been reading this series to my 2nd grade class for a couple of months and they LOVE them! They whine when we have to stop reading and ask for them in any free moment. This one was a big favorite, having your teacher talk about butts is always unbelievably funny! ;) I have been reading these books since the series started years ago, I wish Mr. Greenburg was still writing them. My only complaint is that they are very short for $5 a pop.
