About the Author

Gwo-Hshiung Tzeng is a Distinguished Chair Professor of Kainan University, Taiwan. He received a Bachelor’s degree in business management from the Tatung Institute of Technology (1967); a Master’s degree in urban planning from Chung Hsing University (1971); and a PhD in management science from Osaka University, Japan (1977). His current research interests include statistics, multivariate analysis, networks, routing and scheduling, multiple criteria decision making, fuzzy theory, hierarchical structure analysis for application to technology management, energy, environment, transportation systems, transportation investment, logistics, location, urban planning, tourism, technology management, electronic commerce, and global supply chains. He is editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Operations Research and the International Journal of Information Systems for Logistics and Management, among others.

Jih-Jeng Huang is currently Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Information Management at Soochow University, Taiwan, and teaches research method, multivariate analysis, and capital asset and pricing models, among others. He received his PhD in Information Management from the National Taiwan University. His current research interests include multiple criteria decision making, knowledge management, behavioral economics and finance, and data analysis. He has published on these interests widely in journals and conference proceedings.

Descubri este libro y me llamo mucho la atención el titulo. Lei un poco mas y se me parecia a El curioso incidente del perro a medianoche, pero eso no seria malo porque despues de todo ese libro me encanto.

Me gusto el formato como esta escrito, con pequeños detalles que Colin nos explica antes de pasar a la historia y nos trata de explicar un poco como el ve su mundo, teniendo en cuenta que tiene sindrome de Asperger. Colin esta comenzando su primer año de secundaria en solitario por primera vez en su vida, sera dificil. Casi todos sus compañeros lo rechazan o le hacen alguna maldad por su condicion, pero Colin no se deja llevar mucho por esto.

Tratando de entender la jerarquia/sociedad adolescente en la que esta incluido, hay un disparo en la cafeteria y el, fanatico de Sherlock Holmes y otros del area, no puede dejar de investigar quien es el verdadero responsable.

Me gusto Colin, me gusto su evolucion. Es complicado ver a Colin metiendose en problemas, pero me parecio realista como hace nuevos amigos (y enemigos) en el camino, y su relacion con su familia, unos padres que no saben muy bien que hacer con el y un hermano un poco cruel y celoso.

Recomendaria El caso de la pistola y el pastel de chocolate para todos los que quieren leer algo de misterio juvenil con un protagonista peculiar. Super ligero para leer, solo me tomo un par de horas. El misterio no es muy complicado pero si tiene sus giros inesperados y deja algunos puntos sin descubrir que hacen parecer que el caso no termina aqui, supongo para otro libro pero no tengo idea si tiene continuacion...

About the Author

John Bridges, author of How to Be a Gentleman, is also the coauthor, with Bryan Curtis, of seven other volumes in the best-selling GentleManners series. A Really Good Place to Start

I have an eleven year-old son who thinks he's 13-going-on-21. Like most modern fathers, a nine-hour day - bracketed by a 40-minute commute - doesn't leave me with nearly as much time as I would love to spend with him. Add two younger brothers to the mix and "one-on-one" time becomes truly precious. I honestly believe that being a gentleman gains a man a lot of respect - even if the people he encounters really don't know why they respect him. Like all fathers, I want my sons to be liked & respected.

50 Things Every Young Gentleman Should Know covers the basics in a no-nonsense manner. Each situtation is breifly described and defined. It is then followed by "What you do," "What you DON'T do" and "Why." It is a very easy read (I read it from cover to cover in under 45 minutes.) that communicates it's ideas in a very clear manner. Does it cover EVERY situation that a young man is going to encounter? No, but it does a good job of covering the most common ones. Everything from "What to do with a napkin," to "How to treat someone with a disability."

These are all things that my four brothers and I were taught at home, but we had the absolute luxury (By today's standards.) of Dad being at home on the family farm when he wasn't commercial fishing or working for the county road department. Being the youngest, I got lots of "peer reenforcement" from my older brothers.

My son's reaction? "You're joking, right, Dad?" I looked him squarely in the eye and informed him that I was most certainly not joking and that I expect him to not only read the book, but to learn the things it has to teach -- and to put them to work in his life. He shook his head and walked off to his bedroom with the book. He was back in five minutes, promising to read five "Things" each day. I think he must have read the dedication I enscribed on the inside of the front cover. Most of it is highly personal and (I pray) not applicable to your individual situtation, but here is the last paragraph: "Why is your learning to be a gentleman so important to me? Because I love you and I want you to be liked and respected by everyone you meet. Love, Dad."

Like I said in my review's title: This is not the last word on training up your sons to be gentlemen, but it is a good first step on that all-important journey.

Grandsons loved it!!

I bought this book to use with my grandsons, ages 11 & 13. I pulled it out one day when they were visiting and read them the introduction. It might have been the phrase "impressing the girls" that first caught their attention! I read to them from the book, starting with "How to behave in a movie theater". The chapters are short instructions followed by "You do" and "You don't" and "Why" sections. The advice is excellent and concise! After reading a few chapters to them, the 13 year old asked to see it and picked a few chapters he wanted me to read to them. Then the 11 year old wanted to pick a few!! We spent over an hour reading and discussing and they never lost interest! The next morning they were still saying things like "I put the toilet seat down, "just like a young gentleman should"! We will read more together the next time they visit. The book is written so you can randomly pick chapters that appeal at the time. Money well spent, time well invested in "my two fine young gentlemen"!!

Super introduction to etiquette and behavior

Practical and explicit book for boys and young men to study how to be gentlemen. It explains not only why a behavior is appropriate, but why another behavior is inappropriate and harmful to others or yourself. A must read for all parents of boys in the increasingly asocial world of texting, youtubing, emailing, and facebooking.

An outstanding new take on the classic dungeon crawl

I sadly missed out on the ground floor for Dungeon World, but have been running a game from the PDFs for several weeks now. I'm thrilled to be getting a hard copy, finally!

Dungeon World is a rules-light, narrative RPG that's more or less a love letter to the classic oldschool dungeon crawls of the late 70's and early 80's. If you started playing D&D as a kid, it runs more or less exactly like how you imagined a fantasy game of exploration and adventure *should* run.

If you've run or played Dungeons & Dragons (of any edition) there will be a lot here that's familiar ... and a lot here that just seems weird or doesn't make sense. For example, the Dungeon Master never rolls any dice. And there's no system for initiative once combat starts. And all the rules are broken down into things called "Moves," whatever those are.

But on the other side of the coin, you have classic Paladins, Thieves, Clerics, Fighters, Wizards, and the rest, all with rules to make them act exactly like you hoped your characters always *would* act back when you learned to play D&D. Character creation is easy. The rules are mostly written on your sheet. Everything on the player side just plain makes sense. On the DM's side, once you start to understand how Dungeon World works and what your "Moves" are for, it runs like a dream. My prep time after the first session has been almost zero, which is both unsettling and liberating. But every single session has delivered the fun in spades.

The core of Dungeon World is the narrative flow. The story. There aren't rules for positioning, flanking, oversized weapons, or any of that. You're sitting at a table with your friends, collaborating and making a cohesive narrative with rules and dice. When a dragon breathes fire on you, sure it does damage. But it also *lights things on fire*. There's no rules for this; it acts more or less like how fire should act. If you attack a goblin's sword arm, it could very well drop its weapon or have to switch hands because you just hit it in the arm with a sharp weapon. It's all based on what the DM and the rest of the group think is appropriate or sensible. The game starts and ends with the narrative, not the rules.

Finally, if you need help with the game, there are several vibrant and helpful communities out there, including guides to help those of us who have been running games for 30 years adapt to Dungeon World's paradigm. It's a remarkable achievement, and the authors should be proud.

I think that running DW for several weeks has helped make me a better DM overall. And when we go back to D&D soon, I'll be able to take the lessons I learned from this game and use them in my "normal" campaigns. This will stay on my shelf as an interlude; I can't wait to run it more, and my players can't wait to play more. I'm incredibly glad I took the plunge.

Added 3/26/13: Some quick notes if you pick this up and get a bit confused...
(1) The DM does not roll dice for his "moves." The players' own rolls contribute to finding out what happens. You can roll your own damage, but I prefer to have my players roll for the damage they take. Monsters never roll for "Hack & Slash" or anything like that.
(2) There is no initiative. Action in combat is an extension of the rest of the game - a conversation of sorts, with the GM moderating. The DM "throws" the narrative from player to player as appropriate. This is also how the DM can make fights harder or easier.
(3) Put the narrative first. Make it matter. But as a DM, look through your own Moves for inspiration. Use "soft moves" to move the story along and use "hard moves" for consequences.
(4) The stuff about Fronts? It's confusing at first, but it'll enhance every game you run from here on out. It's a great way of thinking about long-term campaigns.

Many exciting fresh ideas, but not all shine

I'm a little torn on Dungeon World. It is an excellent game with many clever ideas, however it often changes too much and in the end feels a bit too "light" for my tastes.

The dynamic, key feature of the game is really amazing, and leads to some great combats with much less frustration over rules minutiae bogging things down. The succeed/partial success/failure mechanic is subtle yet very powerful, and quite elegant. There are various ways your character's alignment actually comes into play mechanically, and having character back-stories and the heroes' relationships work into the experience reward system is clever and useful.

There really are many fresh, neat ideas in here, and most of them work very smoothly. I can see myself picking and choosing from them to include in my other games. One limitation is that the GM and players may find it difficult to be creative all the time; the juice of the game is keeping an exciting (or at least interesting) narrative going, and the group may get tired a bit quicker than usual. For example, if your average RPG session runs 4 hours, expect to want to break after 3 (or even less).

Despite its great ideas, there are a few things that fall flat for me. One issue is that everything has the same difficulty. The core mechanic involves rolling 2d6 and adding an applicable ability modifier; a result of 10 or more is success. This means that there are relatively few ways you can change the difficulty.

For example, no matter how tough the monster, you will always hit them with a 10. Instead of adding to the difficulty to be hit, armor acts as damage reduction. This certainly makes sense, and is a valid alternative, but doing things this way takes away a certain crunchiness to combat which I feel is important to the feel of the game. If you want to make a task harder, the only way to do so is to make the consequences of failure more dire. More damage, a bigger change in an NPCs attitude, less treasure, and so on. The result is that bigger enemies and more tricky or dangerous situations are not harder per se. Instead, there is just more on the line if you fail.

Again, this a valid way of working out a game's mechanics, and a fairly logical way. However the end result leaves you feeling that your character does not improve. They just go up against more unforgiving obstacles.

While some people have praised the simplified layout and tone of the book, it seems overly oriented towards those who have never played an RPG before. That's all well and good, but honestly if that was their target audience they could have streamlined the book a lot more.

If you're familiar with fantasy RPGs you will find some very clever and useful ideas to borrow for your next game. You will probably even enjoy playing a full Dungeon World game for a while. Most of the book won't be that new to you though. (The usual character classes, spells, and monsters are all old hat at this point.) If you're fairly new to RPGs, this may be just the thing you need to get in strong and get excited without being overwhelmed. But at over 400 pages, it probably could have been just a little more efficient.

Great, easy to learn pen and paper game

Great, easy to learn pen and paper game, perfect for someone just getting into the world of tabletop gaming. The instruction manual was straightforward, and a great read. I could barely put the book down the first time I went through it! Without any prior gaming experience, I was able to run a campaign with 5 friends in a week or so. Dungeon World seems to be built upon making the rules seem to be secondary to the fun, storytelling side of the game. If we made a mistake during the game, we wove it into the story and did not let it disrupt the adventure.

Pros:
-Amazingly fun game
-Easy to learn and execute, even within a short time frame.
-Endless worlds to explore and create

Cons:
-The book has a decent amount of Examples illustrating specific mechanisms, but a longer, more complete example might be nice.

Please, if you are thinking about playing a pen and paper RPG but are intimidated by the rules of D&D and Pathfinder, I strongly urge you to pick this up. I am so glad I did.

“Cats are increasingly popular pets; in 2009 Australian households owned 2.35 million cats, in 2012 their number had increased to 3.3 million (source: Pets Australia). Cats are therefore likely to be presented to veterinarians more frequently, often with diseases or injuries that require complex treatments. Now, finally, a textbook on feline soft tissue surgery has been published! Cat-specific textbooks on internal medicine and orthopaedic surgery are already available, but this book is the missing link to a complete feline practice library. Together with the companion book Feline orthopedic surgery and Musculoskeletal Disease, the whole array of surgical conditions in cats is covered.

There are many soft tissue surgery conditions that are unique to cats; the more common examples are hyperthyroidism, megacolon, injection-site sarcomas, and upper and lower urinary tract disease. Feline soft tissue and general surgery is a comprehensive text that is pleasurable to read because of the many illustrations, photos and case examples. All the editors and the 60 authors of the book are accomplished specialists in feline medicine or surgery, with a wealth of experience in their fields. The selection of techniques is comprehensive and ranges from basic skin surgeries and neutering through intermediate-level head and neck and intestinal surgery to more specialist-level surgery, for example of the thorax, the ureters and the adrenal glands.

The book is relevant to a wide audience because both basic and advanced techniques with the relevant background knowledge are described, so there is useful information for students, newly graduated and experienced veterinarians, and specialists. This book should not be missing from the library of any small animal or mixed veterinary practice that is performing general or soft tissue surgery in cats.
