The book arrived on time. It is clearly used, but not markings. I am not a teacher, so I don't know what to say about the teaching aspect. The chapters are well written, easy to understand. Each chapter has questions and case excerpt.

About the Author
J Percy FitzPatrick (1862-1931) was born of Catholic Irish immigrant parents in King William’s Town. Married in 1889, he had five children growing up in Johannesburg. At Rudyard Kipling’s prompting he wrote out several drafts of his stories of his greenhorn youth of twenty years before under the title The Life, the Man and the Dog. He finalised the work and by 1906 he was able to sponsor the British artist Edmund Caldwell to gather material to illustrate the typescript of what became known as Jock of the Bushveld.

Cheap OCR copy of the original

I don't know how I missed this when ordering, I recall looking through the descriptions, etc. before ordering.

This is a copy of the original book, made by General Books ([...]) and in the front, where copyright information usually are, it says the following:

"We made this book exclusively for you using patented Print on Demand technology."

It goes on to tell you they scan the book, convert it to text using OCR, and that they omit all illustrations. It admits that there may be footnotes in the text, typos and other issues. All of that is true. The list of illustrations are blended in with the text, there are no chapters. Quotation marks and apostrophes are almost randomly inserted, making it hard to distinguish speech attributed to one of the characters and speech patterns. There are no chapters.

If you are a scholar, you can make excuses for this and spend time to decipher the book. If you are buying this book for a child wishing to read the story of "Jock of the Bushveld," then you should not buy this book, kids can't parse this book and it is a meaningless jumble of text. I believe that even an adult may find it hard to read this for enjoyment.

I enjoyed the description of the various wild animals and terrain

This is a story of a dog told by his owner in South Africa in the time when goods were transported by oxen and wagons. Jock's master is a transporter--oxen train operator- and they travel through the bushveld hunting to supplement their food along the route. I enjoyed the description of the various wild animals and terrain. Jock is a loyal companion and always ready to hunt and defend his master. The whole book is tinged with sadness for me because the narrator is talking about their experiences in the past tense. You know that Jock is no longer with us. Maybe because I have an older dog, I kept wondering if this will be the chapter where Jock gets killed. This book took me to a place and time I never even imagined. I don't regret that I spent my time reading it. It has a glossary for the many Dutch and African words sprinkled in the text. This book was one the 5 best books about dogs suggested by an article in the Wall Street Journal.

A good story!

Jock is a dog. He is the object of this story of South Africa which covers about ten years in the latter part of the 19th Century. It is an engaging tale which gives a feel for the times through the eyes of a teamster or transportation worker. It is loosely based on the adventures of its author Percy Fitzpatrick as he traveled ox team wagons throughout central South Africa or the Bushveld. Bushveld is an Afrikaner word which would be the South African equivalent of the Australian "Outback". Jock was the runt of the litter when Percy got him but he grew to become a formidable dog and loyal companion. It is good book to obtain a feel for attitudes and cultural norms of the day. There is an interesting Zulu character in the second half of the story. Since it is based on a true story it is not fanciful like the Quartemain stories. I liked the book and I would have given it five stars but I thought that the first chapter was weak in that it concentrated on the hardships of Percy and that Jock was a long time in being introduced into the story. The last chapter was sad and in some ways disappointing, but such is life. Overall I recommend this book for a general adventure book. It was written for children but can be appreciated by anyone who enjoys such tales.

This book is among my favorites in my Pagan library. I have had it since it was published and have over the years bought several copies. It's either been referred to so much it's fallen apart or has been borrowed and never returned. The brilliance of Scott's teachings are that he teaches only what's worked for him but he gives permission to you as Practitioner to evolve into your own Witch - you can tweak the spells so that they work for you and he applauds that and suggests that you do just exactly that. I have always had nothing but respect for the man and his writing - and am sad that he's no longer in this world to write more and share more of his wisdom.

This is a great book to give to a new witch, one who is just starting out on their path and also for those who're perhaps more jaded and have been on their path for decades and maybe needing a reminder as to why they stepped onto this way in the first place - there's inspiration in these pages.

Also, the illustrations by Robin Wood make me want a coloring book of those pictures as well!! Stunning work all around!

Cunningham is great at writing helpful guides for beginners on the path of the Goddess. This book is no exception. The spells are simple and the ingrediants are easily found. No climbing to the top of a maple tree to get the highest leaf to throw in a stream running east. =P Don't you hate that?! ;) This book is a continuation of Earth Power, but you don't have to read that one first. This book has instructions for doing spells using each of the elements. There are also spells that use snow and stars which is rather unique. Also, there is a chapter at the end on how to write and perform your own spells! This is refreshing because it truly does help when your own energy goes into your rituals. I would also recommend Wicca: The Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Cunningham. It is still my favorite of all time for beginners. Best of luck on your journey, and Blessed Be!

Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is a follow-up to the book Earth Power. Both are comprehensive guides to simple folk magick, which doesn't require elaborate ritual but for those who crave ritual can be easily incorporated. But the two books are not clones, nor is Earth, Air, Fire, and Water simply a padded re-release or sequel to Earth Power. They use a similar setup, and cover the same topic, folk magick, but Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is almost wholly new. It covers some of the topics discussed in Earth Power, but encompasses a range of new or related topics. Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is indespensible among Cunningham's volume of works. If you want a comprehensive guide to folk magick, and have read Earth Power (you should start with Earth Power), then Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is definitely for you. If you haven't read Earth Power, then do, and then come back for this one, you will learn, be entertained, and probably recommend this and other Scott Cunningham books to friends before too long.

ROBIN BUSS's TRANSLATION from PENGUIN CLASSICS

This review is for those who've already decided they want to read The Count of Monte Cristo (you won't regret it!), and don't know which version to get.

Short answer: see review title, duh!

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite book, and I've read several translations, both abridged and unabridged.

TRANSLATION
The Buss translation is the most modern, and reads most fluidly. A quick example comparing this translation with the one found on Project Gutenberg:

PG - His wife visited for him, and this was the received thing in the world, where the weighty and multifarious occupations of the magistrate were accepted as an excuse for what was really only calculated pride...

BUSS - His wife visited on his behalf; this was accepted in society, where it was attributed to the amount and gravity of the lawyer's business -- when it was, in reality, deliberate arrogance...

Buss's work reads like the book was written in English. The two or so times that the work is nearly untranslatable, Buss makes a footnote about it (eg, an insinuated insult using the formal "vous" instead of the familiar "tu"). Other translations just skip the subtlety. The most common translation out there (uncredited in my version) reads like a swamp. Trust me, get Buss.

ABRIDGED V UNABRIDGED
Abridged versions of this book rarely say "abridged." You can tell by the size: abridged is 500-700 pages, unabridged is 1200-1400 pages. Go for the unabridged.

The abridged version is VERY confusing! Pruning 1200 pages down to 600 leaves a lot of plot on the cutting room floor. Suddenly, arriving at dinner are 4 new characters; it's very tiring to try to keep up with the hole-ridden story of the abridged versions. And you know where the holes are? Publishers "clean up" the book by omitting the affairs, illegitimate children, homosexuality, hashish trips, etc.

As an added bonus in the Penguin Classics edition, there's a wonderful appendix bursting with footnotes to explain all the 19th century references, and a quick guide to the rise and fall of Napoleon (crucial to the politics in the story).

A gripping tale of love and revenge

Warning: Do NOT pick this book up and start it if you have something that you need to do in the next day or three. You won't be able to put the book down, or if you do, you'll move zombielike through your everyday tasks while your mind stays with the adventures of Edmund Dantes.
The Count of Monte Cristo is a delicious book, full of intrigue, great fight scenes, love, passion, and witty social satire. Dumas has a wonderful grasp of human nature and a talent for rendering all the follies of man in delightful, snappy prose. I immediately recognized people that I know (yes, even myself) in his vivid characters, which made the book all the more engaging to me.
Some people might be put off by the size of the book -- it's a pretty hefty volume -- an tempted to buy the abridged version. Don't! I've heard from people who've read both versions that the abridged version is a pathetic, washed out shadow of the full novel. At any rate, as thick and impossibly long as The Count of Monte Cristo may seem when you open it for the first time, you'll feel as though it's far too short by the time you get to the last page.

Absolutely the best book ever

This book is an example of perfect fiction writing. Its length is 5 times the average book and it still was not long enough! The story, the characters, the settings and the emotions enthralled me for days. I could not put it down. I was living the book as it took me to France, the mediterranean, Italy and every home, cave and mode of transportation detailed in exemplary fashion by Dumas. Without giving away the intrigue... This book is the story of a wronged young sailor and follows his life as he is imprisoned due to the actions of 3 jealous men. He lives in prison for an extended period of time, meeting a man who gives him hope and a life beyond his dreams. He escapes the horrid dungeon and seeks revenge on the 3 men who took away everything he ever hoped for. This book is amazing, it will not disappoint anyone. I cannot believe I did not read it before. Thank you Kindle for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book for free, however, it is worth paying for and sharing with anyone who loves to read.
