Excellent Handbook on bread and butter civil engineering

I have read the first edition of this book and it answered all my questions and then some. This book is ideal for young engineers who don't have field experience. It covers survey staking, grading, excavation, drainage, paving, water and sewer pipes from a contractor's perspective. I am going to buy the revised edition.

About the Author
Barry Saltzman, 1932-2001, was professor of geology and geophysics at Yale University and a pioneer in the theory of weather and climate, in which he made several profound and lasting contributions to knowledge of the atmosphere and climate. Saltzman developed a series of models and theories of how ice sheets, atmospheric winds, ocean currents, carbon dioxide concentration, and other factors work together, causing the climate to oscillate in a 100,000-year cycle. For this and other scientific contributions, he received the 1998 Carl Gustaf Rossby Research Medal, the highest award from the American Meteorological Society. Saltzman was a fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an honorary member of the Academy of Science of Lisbon. His work in 1962 on thermal convection led to the discovery of chaos theory and the famous "Saltzman-Lorenz attractor."

About the Author
Dr Graham Cairns, UK, 1971, is an academic and author in the field of architecture who has written extensively on film, advertising and political communication. He has held Visiting Professor positions at universities in Spain, the UK, Mexico, the Gambia, South Africa and the US. He has worked in architectural studios in London and Hong Kong and previously founded and ran a performing arts group, Hybrid Artworks, that specialised in video installation and performance writing.
 
He is author and editor of: El arquitecto detrás de la cámara, Abada Editores, Madrid, 2007; Deciphering Art, Architecture and Advertising; selling to the sophisticated Consumer, Libri, Publishing, London, 2010; Reinventing Architecture and Interiors - a socio-political view of building adpatation. He is currently editor of the academic journal Architecture_MPS (Architecture, Media, Politics, Society).

Architecture of the screen

This book sets out to upturn some conventions about how architecture appropriates film. It states that it turns a scenography approach into a cinematographic one. It does. I found it revealing in its general theme and in its details. The different (and very different) sections, are each full of fascinating details and unexpected connections between film, architecture, philosophy, art etc. Sometimes, it goes too far and the author let's his range of knowledge get in the way of a clear argument. But the range of subjects linked into the overall theme is impressive. It's very well and clearly written despite using some obscure references - and the footnotes are useful in explaining some theoretic concepts and technical issues. It's equally about film and architecture and doesn't seem to favour one or the other. Well worth the time (and sometimes difficulty) in reading.

Book's not bad, great story telling but sort of amateurish. End of the book focuses on his personally agenda with advancing sport in India which isn't as interesting as his first hand account of his life story.

A powerful story written quite simply

The legend, Milkha Singh, writes his story in the most simplistic fashion. It's an easy read and an inspirational narrative. He portrays the importance of setting realistic but ambitious goals at different stages of his life and directs all his focus on achieving these goals one-by-one. There are instances where I felt he was being hypocritical, but on reading further, understood his reasons behind those actions. Overall, India needs more people like him to change the face of it's dismal sports record as it stands today.

The book is very inspiring and filled with lot of true facts of what is happening in the Indian sport. The approach towards sport he had is very much required in other areas too if India wants to be one of the leading nations in the world. Before it becomes too late, India needs to plan developing the talent in every area right from the very early age. The talent not only needs to be recognised but systems need to be set up to groom the same.

Dark romance with boxing background

This is a rather dark and tough-minded book about a young woman growing up in the foster care system of Baltimore whose friends and few relatives are embroiled in drugs and crime. She finds an outlet in boxing and is smitten by a male boxer -- and yet also repelled. Her upbringing has made her resistant to any kind of reliance on anyone else. For much of the book, the narrative is rather compelling and the love affair, when it erupts, is convincing. The descriptions of boxing and training are also interesting. But as the book progresses, we get less and less boxing and more and more melodrama revolving around criminal gang violence. The book ends with nothing resolved -- you have to read on to the next installment to find out what happens -- and I'm not interested enough to do that. I must say I thoroughly dislike these kinds of books which leave the reader hanging. It's fine to write trilogies - but each volume needs to stand alone and end with some closure.

Can't wait for book 2!

This was a great read from start to finish, definitely one of those hard to put down page turners. Ashley Claudy has created an exciting romance novel that has substance, depth of character, intrigue, laugh and cry moments, along with exciting action scenes. I have read a few sports/romance books in my time and this one is probably the best I've ever read.

I loved the characters. Gage is a bad ass alpha male but he is also so much more and Reagan, our heroine, is no shrinking violet. Infact all the characters throughout the book really come to life. The author is skilled at dialogue, throughout the story I found it all very believable.

When I first started reading I was a little unsure if I would like the first person point of view as I tend not to like reading in this pov. But once past the first page I'd have had to think twice about which pov it was written in. It completely disappeared. Kudos to the author.

My only negative about the whole book is that this is book 1 and I have to wait until March for the second part!

Emotionally Gripping

Ms. Claudy can certainly tell a good story. Her writing is tight, her pacing flows, her characters are rich and three-dimensional, and the dialogue feels authentic.

I am enamored with Regan. She's tough, tender, hard-as-nails, and vulnerable. I feel her pulse beating in my chest. A no-nonsense heroine, a fierce friend, a champion. I so want her to find her HEA.

Gage. Anthony. Silas. Dexter. Four prominent male figures interacting with Regan, each trying to sway her, to persuade her to their way of thinking. Each strong in their own right. Each weak over her.

A good supporting cast of characters, too. I adore Nan. My heart broke. James. Leona. All of them. Made real by this talented writer.

Only "peeve" I had was the author's choice to not use apostrophes. I don't understand why she chose to put significance on something that isn't affected by speech, but is visible in print. It annoyed me enough to warrant mention.

I am about to pick up the next book in the series. I care about these characters too much to stop reading now.
