Serviceable autobiography of the dancer-comedienne-leading lady, now 80. Rogers does an always absorbing job of recreating her legendary career without ever quite capturing the voice we all remember from her films. As a young comedienne, she often gave a mischievous, sassy edge to her roles, coming on fast and smart. The woman who writes this book, however, has been a nondrinking, largely nonsmoking Christian Scientist all her adult life--not the opinionated, raspy personality the ``Ginger'' implies. Rogers has been the victim of husbands given to partying, drink, and philandering rather than a woman chasing her own satisfactions. Born Virginia McMath in Independence, Missouri, she was stage- struck early, winning dance contests and then joining the vaudeville circuits at 14; luckily, she had a wise mother who guided her professionally for much of her life while allowing Rogers to make her own mistakes romantically. They parted company briefly when, at 17, Rogers married Jack Culpepper, 29, who turned out to be a drunk. At 19, the performer was the toast of Broadway, starring in Florenz Ziegfeld's production of George and Ira Gershwin's Girl Crazy and off on a rocket that took her through 19 films before Flying Down to Rio teamed her with Fred Astaire. She doesn't mention her wit for stealing scenes in those earlier films but makes clear that she was an accomplished artist with strong film presence even before her teaming with Astaire. Rogers describes the making of each of the team's musicals, her hard times with director Mark Sandrich (Top Hat), love for George Stevens (Swing Time, her favorite--but really not the team's best film, which is Roberta). Marriage to her idol Lew Ayres dissolved after six years, an on-and-off romance with Cary Grant fizzled. Keeps you rapt, mostly. High point: the Oscar for Kitty Foyle. In Her Own Words

I found this book to be delightful. I'm not taken aback by the use of the first person pronoun, or the comments on Christian Science, or her bursts of enthusiasm that come through from many years ago. In fact, they enhance understanding of this ebullient and hard-working personality. She's open about her flaws and imperfections...and in fact, seems eager to communicate them to the public....who, seeing her in more than a few transcendentally beautiful films, had come to expect the same from her in person. She demonstrates her down-home humanity and her joy of life many times over...even as she attempts to set the record straight, on all the so many erroneous things, that were said about her over the years.

She's quiet on certain (but not all) personal things...i.e., between husband and wife....and I'm glad she had the good taste NOT to let us in on the things that are none of our business. She was more of a private person...like Fred...than many would have supposed. She was active socially at different parts of her life, but always preferred the small gathering, or the small party, with friends.

Some viewed her as an "ultra-conservative". But here too, she sets the record straight. She only supported her mother's right to speak out regarding her opinions on left influence of some Hollywood script writers. It should be noted however, that this was at the very moment when the theft of American atom bomb secrets led to an exact copy, being detonated by Mr. Stalin. Compare Ginger's "sin" to Kate Hepburn's melodramatic and simplistic "I am a communist" speech in their support. I'm not disparaging Kate at all, but truly, which was worse?

She wasn't so "ultra-conservative" not to have met and admired Democrats FDR, Elinor Roosevelt, Harry Truman (who had a day for her in Independence, Missouri), and Jimmy Carter. She wasn't so "ultra-conservative" to have broken her engagement with a cheating Howard Hughes, and turned away from a life of wealth and luxury. She wasn't so "ultra-conservative" not to have married a pacifist, and to have considered as her favorite film, Hollywood's first anti-war movie: "All Quiet on the Western Front", starring her future husband Lew Ayres. She wasn't so "ultra conservative" not to have been a fighter for her own rights, and the rights of actresses. And in fact, it should be noted that her friend and colleague, Ronald Reagan, with whom, in 1950, she did the anti Klu Klux Klan film "Storm Warning", helped to end the cold war, with Mickhail Gorbachev...whom HE befriended.

Underlying her great talent, charm, personality, versatility, and good looks, she had a strength of character, which earned her every bit of her many accolades. Yes, she admittedly and not surprisingly, also made mistakes, both professional and personal...but...and this is key to understanding her...bounced back every time. She didn't live in a dream world of her brilliant past career...but lived in the moment...even if that moment was not up to her highest past standards...as is almost always inevitable in late career.

In my opinion, this did not diminish her one iota. As Billy Wilder said..."We are all as good as the best things we've done." If this is the standard, and I think it is, then Ginger Rogers must be ranked very highly indeed. Her dance musicals, her dramatic acting, and her skills as a first rate comedienne, her stage musicals, all place her in the category of a classic Hollywood legend.

She was a hard working actress, who loved her audiences; quietly took care of her family and charities; transcended her mid-West background to become a woman of the world; and who never took out a loan in her life. Fred Astaire had a three word description of her spunk. Fred simply said: "She had guts.". That's Ginger Rogers. I recognize the quality of her life....and I recommend this book highly.

Terrible book with a nice cover.

not worth 99 cents, so glad I got it for free with Kindle unlimited. The author provides a few one paragraph examples of recent intrusions and provides a few reasons people hack. But the reasons, stealing, boredom, disruption, financial gain and ethical hacking are only a few sentences each with no depth. Finally his attempt to explain how to learn hacking is terrible. Basically he says to learn linux, some programming languages, and html. He doesn't even mention basic networking concepts such as scanning, port numbers, services, credentials, passwords, hashes, etc, which are way more important than programming languages or html. Don't waste your time or money!

A great Islamic AND modern version of Cinderella that everyone (even non-Muslims) can enjoy

I was apprehensive to get this. I didn't know what to expect as I have read some really bad Muslim kids' books. Thankfully this is so far above what I was fearing. This sets a new standard in Islamic materials for kids.

I'm a firm believer that fairy tales and nursery rhymes can be used to teach kids. But many of these tales are told traditionally and their messages and mores don't always hold up over time. Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, but there are some problematic elements to it when trying to use it teach kids today. What kid is going to understand Cinderella's action in putting up with abuse? Or the Prince just marrying whoever he meets at a dance? Or that marriage is the end goal of a woman's life?

This story takes the story we all know and updates it for the modern era with a focus on Islamic manners and attributes. But besides the Islamic vocabulary, honestly this book would be great for any faith people who believe in patience, reliance on God, and treating others kindly even when they are not kind in return. I think anyone can appreciate this story.

Moreover I love that the story is still recognizable. Gilani didn't excise parts of the story to make it fit into some "Islamic" mold. For example, I was curious how she would fit in the fairy godmother role from the most known version. Well she comes up with something that doesn't change any part of the story and still makes sense Islamically and realistically.

My daughter and I enjoyed this very much. My daughter went on to tell others about the book - they were talking about the Disney version and my daughter wanted to tell them about this version! She liked it better.

I have preordered the author's next book and can't wait to see what she does with all the stories. My only (if any) criticism would be I wish she would include more parts in the books or maybe whole books themselves to tales boys can relate to.

Highly recommended especially for children's public library multicultural picturebook collections

Cinderella: An Islamic Tale is a picturebook of a classic Islamic fable, retold by Fawzia Gilani. The gentle and pious Zahra's parents die, she lives a harsh life with a stepmother who cares little for her. Yet she stays true to her beliefs and her principles, and her inner goodness ultimately earns her goodness in reward. "As for the stepmother and stepsisters, when they saw how Allah had rewarded Zahra's goodness, they were filled with shame. They repented for their sins and asked for her forgiveness. And, remembering the example of the Prophet Yusuf and his brothers, Princess Zahra forgave them wholeheartedly." Simple, colorful illustrations enhance this lovely recreation of a cherished fairy tale, and the final two pages offer a glossary of Arabic terms as well as a brief footnote list of the passages from the Qur'an and Hadith referred to by the story. Cinderella: An Islamic Tale is highly recommended especially for children's public library multicultural picturebook collections.

Beautiful retelling Muslim Cinderella

My five-year-old princess-obsessed daughter and her children's-book-obsessed Mom both LOVE this book. I am asked to read it just about each night before bed. The drawings are simple, clean and beautiful. All the characters develop nicely and there are no lose ends. A very believable and attainable tale of faith, patience, simplicity and taqwa. Highly recommended!

A masterful insight on improving your leadership skills

There are a vast number of leadership books available. I have read a few of them over the 25 years that I have worked in financial services management. I confess I have often been tempted by the high profile leadership gurus/business celebrities that flood the market with their wisdom and especially those that offer quick solutions to becoming more successful as a leader and manager.
This book exceeded all of my expectations and it's written in an engaging, honest and practical style. It's easy to understand and the author helps by summarising the information he provides at the end of each chapter, which really helped me memorise it and remain focussed.
What I did not expect at all, was that this book would to take me on a journey of soul searching about how serious I am now, or ever have been, about being the best leader I can be, or indeed the best team member.
By covering psychology, it took me to places, where I have to say I felt distinctly uncomfortable about myself and my performance, not just in business but in my social, spiritual, and family life too.
As a self-help manual, I will be using this book as a reference point for some considerable time to come. Hopefully, familiarity and improvement on my part will ease the personal anxiety of the first encounter.
I am not an expert book reviewer, as you can no doubt tell but I do heartily recommend this book to any team member, manager or leader that wants to improve their business performance and perhaps their life.

Simply, the best leadership model

I'm coach and soft skills consultant and the production process I follow everytime I'm trying to create a new product is something similar to: search the best content, pick up the best you can learn and develop what you need. After 3 months of searching leadership techniques and models, this is the best model you'll find and I'll tell you why.

First, because this book explains a model as simple as possible, letting you get as deep as needed while understand the basic content.

Second, because after some years working on these issues I've read a lot about leadership and every key idea this book gives you will make you say 'Oh my god, that's what I've been felling/seeing/hating/searching for too long.' There're no errors on the focus or on the approach: every key idea is a kye of leadership.

Third, because it works. I've read it. Then I read it again. Then I used it to coach other people and the results are awesome.

Great book, great content, great leadership model.

A Handbook for Wise Leadership

At last we have a well-researched, deeply thought-out and clearly presented handbook for wise leadership. This book presents a robust model of leadership for the good, based on the concept of leadership presence, with self-mastery at its core.

Integrating and transcending previous, less accurate models of leadership, author James Scouller presents the innovative "Three Levels of Leadership" model. The three levels are: Public, Private, and Personal leadership. The first two outer levels may be familiar to students of leadership theory; however the third, inner level is the most influential yet often neglected leadership realm.

Leadership is defined, the essential responsibility of a leader is identified, four dimension of leadership are described, and tables identify 34 distinct public leadership behaviors and 14 private leadership behaviors. Self-assessment tools, available on-line, allow readers to determine those skills that are strengths and those areas that need the most improvement. Of course these can also be used to evaluate others who seek to lead you.

But improvement in personal leadership--increasing that often elusive quality of leadership presence--provides the greatest opportunity. We learn that leadership presence has these seven qualities:
1. Personal Power--Accepting full responsibility for what you do
2. High, real self-esteem--based on an accurate assessment of your competencies
3. Drive to do more, to grow--striving to improve and contribute toward the good
4. Balance--integration of your purpose with respect for the free will of others
5. Intuition--creative insight and foresight distilled from your grasp of complexity
6. In the now--paying full attention to current issues
7. Inner peace of mind and fulfillment--joy and a state of psychological flow

Together these create a wholeness based on an authentic understating of your true self. Genuine leadership presence contrasts with charisma, the more familiar yet superficial behavior often cited as a leadership characteristic. People sense the difference, respond with trust, and become inspired by your leadership presence.

While the first half of the book is a well presented leadership guide--surveying, augmenting, and integrating existing leadership advice and theory--the second half of the book breaks new ground that can unleash true leadership potential.

Personal leadership requires developing skills in three areas:
1. Technical knowledge and skills includes knowing details of the particular business you are in, along with general skills in individual psychology, group psychology, and time management.
2. A positive attitude toward others is the belief that other people are as important as you. If you want to excel as a leader you must serve those you lead without harming others
3. Self-mastery is a commitment to self-awareness, self-integration, growth, and flexible command of your psyche.

The book introduces a new model of human psyche. This model is combined with principles of personal change that assist readers in overcoming resistance when making the personal transformations required to increase self-mastery and become a wiser leader.

Several tools for developing self-mastery are provided in the form of mental exercises to be repeated daily over periods of months or years. These include the three core techniques of: disidentification and centering, mindfulness meditation, and self-enquiry, supplemented by three techniques of: mental rehearsal and affirmation, knowing your values, and developing a personal mission-vision statement.

Use these exercises to deliberately discover your true self--who you truly are--identify and dismiss unconscious limiting beliefs, and get on with the work of leading wisely.

The richness of this book does justice to the complex topic of leadership, yet the book is well-written, accessible, and easy to understand and apply. Each chapter ends with a summary of key points, several helpful tables throughout the book assemble, list, and summarize essential skills, and a companion web site provides supplementary aids to help readers master the materials.

Netflix’s successful mining of user data to construct the House of Cards phenomenon is the kind of effort that would send Anna Bernasek and D.T. Mongan, the authors of "All You Can Pay: How Companies Use Our Data to Empty Our Wallets," scurrying into their doomsday bunker. So why does a book that rages against data mining — a standard marketing practice — make the best business books list?

It’s because, while the marketing industry holds up data as the holy grail of the discipline, consumers — thanks to repeated data breaches and Edward Snowden — are becoming ever more data-aware. "All You Can Pay" powerfully illustrates why so many consumers are waking up. Of the three books reviewed here, it’s certainly the most provocative, even if it’s not always right.

Bernasek, a veteran financial journalist, and Mongan, a lawyer, hold that the escalating amount of data that companies have about individual consumers is being used not just for increased customization of products, but also for increased customization of pricing. The mass market is over.

Healthy markets — such as what used to be the mass market — are relatively transparent; both sides have a good idea of what a fair price is. But the authors say the trend toward mass customization has been accompanied by an increasing asymmetry of information. Because of the data consumers incessantly (and often unwittingly) spew about their preferences and private lives on Facebook, Google, Amazon, and elsewhere, companies now know much more about consumers than consumers know about the companies. Ultimately, that means that companies know how much individual consumers can pay, and they charge accordingly.

“If you think companies won’t use the growing knowledge they have about you to extract higher prices, think again,” the authors write. “In many small and big ways, companies already take advantage of your trust. With more sophisticated data extraction and analysis, exploitation will only get easier, cheaper, and more pervasive.”

So-called dynamic pricing, the mechanism that makes umbrellas more expensive during a rainstorm and flights more expensive during the holidays, has been with us for decades. But the picture painted in "All You Can Pay" is far more insidious. Theoretically, if Amazon knew you were better off financially than your next-door neighbor, it could charge you more for a pair of Nikes. One of the book’s best passages is its analysis of college financial aid. In theory, tuition is transparent: It’s posted on every university website. But prices paid by students vary widely. The family of every student coughs up boatloads of financial information, and the college ultimately decides — in a process that is far from transparent — how much each student can pay.

While reading this book, it’s impossible not to wonder whether such price disparities will really trickle down to the aforementioned pair of Nikes or a bar of soap. At least in e-commerce, one-to-one customized pricing is technologically possible. But that doesn’t mean it will happen en masse. Some bad actors are willing to misuse data, but not everyone does so. "All You Can Pay" paints a compelling and obviously Orwellian picture of data overlords manipulating every transaction. But it goes too far in painting consumers as powerless and companies as defaulting to being evil, when given the choice.

In fact, until the very end, the book ignores the fact that consumers have more of a voice than they’ve ever had. Who hasn’t gone on a local Facebook group and asked what an appropriate price is for having a plumber unclog a drain?

Still, "All You Can Pay" is a must-read for marketers. Consumers are increasingly skittish about the use of their data. We all know there’s a quid pro quo about the Internet; we trade information about ourselves for access, content, and discounts on goods and services. A book such as "All You Can Pa"y — which aspires to be a consumer rallying cry — should serve as a reminder to marketers to continually ask themselves whether they are being responsible in how they use their customers’ data, and what the blowback will be if they’re not.

The difference between how much you would pay for something if you had to and how much you actually pay is called economic surplus. The surplus captured by consumers is known as the consumer surplus, and the profits from businesses are known as the producer surplus. The total economic surplus is the sum of both the consumer surplus and the business surplus, and always up for grabs.

The total surplus that could be captured from selling water is probably infinite because nobody can survive long without it. However, so far nobody has monopolized the market. Regardless, bottled water now comprises the third biggest category of beverages (175) consumed in 2012 America in terms of gallons, ahead of coffee (15%) and trailing soft drinks (27%). 'Flat' water (no bubbles - eg. Dasani, Aquafina) is essentially sourced from the public system. Local water departments don't spend big money marketing their product.

Market segmentation yields prices not directly tied to costs, and the number of consumers in each market shrinks - along with their marketplace power. Further, as market segmentation increases, the quality of information available to consumers drops, and the value of branding increases. As markets become more segmented, public goods become less valued - eg. more sales of generators results in less caring about the reliability of the public grid, and more pupils in private school reduce the overall concern for quality public schools.

On April 2014, Google posted the following on its website: 'Our automated systems analyze your contend (including emails) to provide you personally relevant product features, such as customized search results, tailored advertising, and spam and malware detention. This analysis occurs as the content is sent, received, and when it is stored.' Google doesn't make any promises about what it will or won't do with that information. And Google is reading email both sent from and received by a Gmail user. Google has 48,000 full-time employees, spent $8 billion on R&D in 2013, gets over half its revenues from outside the U.S., and 91% of revenues from advertising.

Google's algorithm contains 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Google cookies track our movements even on non-Google web pages. It now has 75% of the U.S. search market and over 80% of the mobile search market in the U.S.

Data brokers gather information from voter registration, bankruptcy filings, in-store purchases, online purchases, online searches, and warranty registrations. One of the brokers has up to 3,000 items of information on virtually very U.S. consumer.

Colleges and universities use price discrimination to determine their pricing. Coupons are customer loyalty programs other means of price discrimination. (Frederick Reichheld and Earl Sasser found that loyal customers buy more and pay higher prices - their rule of thumb shows a 5% increase in customer retention increases profitability by 25%.)

Dynamic pricing, first pioneered by airlines, allows sellers to instantly change the price offered to an individual customer. Staples uses zip codes to offer different prices, Uber uses congestion/availability. (It's also why tickets are non-transferable.)

3-D printing is perhaps the most important new technology enabling mass customization. The authors overstate reality, however, contending that (segmentation) gives sellers no incentive to produce high-quality, low-priced goods and services, and suggesting that airlines make flying economy about as miserable an experience as possible so that those who can afford it will travel premium or business class.

Unfortunately, needing more pages to qualify as a book instead of just an article (little/no money) they continue - blathering about detailed terms and conditions that apply to most every online and many bricks-and-mortar purchases, and the fact that Google allows itself to share your data (aggregated and not-identifiable) with others. It then continues with material of less and less relevance.
Companies can learn practically everything there is to know about us, but we possess only limited knowledge about them.

About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

The Best Romeo and Juliet I've found for teaching

I've been teaching Romeo and Juliet to ninth graders for eight years, and this is by far the best edition I've used to teach. The commentary is helpful, and pointed out important topics for discussion. There is plenty of room to write notes in the margin -- in fact, I've got two copies, both with notes, so that I have an emergency backup! One of the most useful things I found in this edition is the character map in the beginning of the book, which I've modified into a handout that I give my students to help keep all the characters straight! I can't wait until Cliffs Complete has released versions of all of Shakespeare's plays!

I have to say that the information given in this book was definitely helpful. I liked how they summarized the following scene at the beginning of the scene and had commentary on the scene at the end. The commentary is definitly helpful, although it could be a little bit more in depth in places. It is particularly helpful how they define terms in the margins that may be unfamiliar to readers.

Most of the information in the introduction/bio of Shakespere/etc. wasn't new to me and it seems pretty similar to the introduction in their other books, but it is still helpful for review and to readers who are unfamiliar with this information.

Definitly recommended. Excellent study tool.

Great Educational Tool

I work as a high school English teacher and I love the Cliffs Complete texts. I purchased Romeo and Juliet last year because it was my first time teaching the play and I wasn't too informed. There is a very valuable summary and analysis section after each scene which I found invaluable. Instead of having to peruse pages of literary criticisms and reviews, I just read this to get an understanding of the text. I imagine that college students (whether taking an intro course or advanced level lit class) will also benefit from using this text as supplemental to primary texts and sources.

Very condensed, concise book

Book is very thin, totaling just 255 pages. A required book for my immunology class for pharmacy school, written by my professor. This is a book you'd be willing to bring to class, not a heavy thick textbook at all.

This intriguing survey of America's rapidly mutating funeral customs probes the one force mightier than death: consumerism. Journalist Cullen explores the innumerable ways in which funerals are being personalized, publicized, economized, commercialized, trivialized and, perhaps, humanized. Among the many offbeat memorials she unearths are funerals with Hawaiian, tango or Harley-Davidson themes, as well as beer-themed caskets, eco-friendly funerals, "human diamonds" manufactured from a loved one's ashes, and a Colorado town that celebrates a do-it-yourself cryonics pioneer with its Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival, now a major tourist attraction. In the middle of it all, she finds, is an uneasy funeral industry, squeezed at the bottom by cheap Chinese caskets and the vogue for no-frills cremation and challenged at the top by finicky boomer customers demanding more elaborate and symbol-laden rites (one poignant graveside dove-release attracted a passing hawk, with off-message results.) Cullen isn't much given to muckraking or dark pensées; "Death is a big, huge bummer" is as morbid as she gets. Her set-piece retrospectives on the guests of honor at unusual send-offs sometimes seem dully eulogistic. But for the most part her vivid reportage and wryly sympathetic tone feel anything but embalmed. (Aug.)

A New York–based staff writer for Time, Lisa Takeuchi Cullen was its Tokyo correspondent, as well as a writer for Money. A recipient of a fellowship from the International Reporting Project, she is a graduate of Columbia University's journalism school and a member of the Asian-American Journalists Association. Cullen was born and raised in Kobe, Japan. She lives in New Jersey with her husband and their daughter.

An intriguing look at changing customs

In 2003, author Lisa Cullens was given an assignment by her editors at Time Magazine to look into new trends in funeral services among Baby Boomers in America. This seemed fertile ground for inquiry- after all, around 2.3 million Americans will die in the coming year, and as the population ages, this number will double, if population trends continue, by 2040. Cullens' editor was particularly curious in seeing her write about "wacky" new trends in funerals- NASCAR coffins, artificial diamonds made from the cremated remains ("cremains", in the language of the industry) of loved ones, and that sort of thing. But what she discovered on her journey went well beyond the curious and the strange, although that aspect is represented in this book. She discovered how, as the ethnic and cultural profile of this country continues to change, funeral customs have changed, too, among both the immigrant communities and the native born.

Cullens' journey takes her from the mundane- traditional funeral homes in New York- to the exotic- a Hmong funeral in St. Paul. Minnisota- and the truly bizarre, a pyramid in Salt Lake City where a fellow by the name of Corky Ra prepares bodies in something approximating ancient Egyptian mummification. Along the way she visits schools of Mortuary Science, casket discounters, mourning families, and Dr. Gunther von Hagens, the German scientist/showman, with his traveling exhibit of "plastinated" cadavers. Interwoven with Cullens narration are the stories of a number of recently deceased people, and how they, or their families, chose the celebration that followed their departure. One chapter, on the emerging tradition of "green" burials, in which bodies are buried in such as way so as to quickly decompose and feed the ecosystem impressed me enough that I made a decision to research this for my own (hopefully distant) eventual disposal. The idea of becoming part of a nature preserve sounds much better- and more ecologically sound- than either quasi-permanent internment in a large, and ridiculously costly casket, or being turned into a lot of ash and gas.

"Remember Me" will no doubt be compared to Mary Roach's "Stiff", which is unfortunate, as this is a much better, and much more respectful book; Cullens doesn't treat her subject as something that must be viewed with the postmodern sense of ironic detachment that spoiled "Stiff" for me; rather, she treats all her subjects with deference and with respect, even the fellow making mummies in Salt Lake City. Cullens herself worries that some will also compare it to Jessica Mitford's "The American Way of Death", and makes a point of stressing that her aim is not a debunking of the funeral industry. I don't think to many people will make that comparison- although I suspect a lot of reviewers looking for a point of reference will. The rest of us will simply enjoy a well-written book that manages to be interesting, entertaining, and thought provoking.

NOT what you're thinking

I loved it. I learned a lot about a subject that you really don't want to sit down and discuss with your family and/or friends. Lisa Takeuchi Cullen wrote in such a way that turned a normally sad experience into an elightening journey. I learned I really didn't know as much as I thought I did about the funeral business in America. It is not a depressing book. I laughed at many stories (and the puns...intended, I'm sure). I enjoyed her sort of "journaling" style. I did not want to read a book filled with statistics and business plans. I could not put this book down because each chapter was so interesting. On a recent trip I even got to see the Reef Balls mentioned in the book. A wonderful read and a book that just may change your final decision.

A tour through the modern rituals of honoring the death of a loved one

This fascinating, fun and quirky book takes death out of its usual context of fear and sadness and explores the modern rituals of death in a way that is emotionally easy to read. I felt a little trepidation reading this book, since my best friend's mother just died last month and I wondered if it might hit to close to home, but Cullen found a way of speaking about death and its rituals that is both respectful and irreverent, and it enriched my thoughts about death rather than cheapening them.
