Moloka'i, by Alan Brennert

This richly imagined novel, set in Hawai'i more than a century ago, is an extraordinary epic of a little-known time and place---and a deeply moving testament to the resiliency of the human spirit.

Rachel Kalama, a spirited seven-year-old Hawaiian girl, dreams of visiting far-off lands like her father, a merchant seaman. Then one day a rose-colored mark appears on her skin, and those dreams are stolen from her. Taken from her home and family, Rachel is sent to Kalaupapa, the quarantined leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka'i. Here her life is supposed to end---but instead she discovers it is only just beginning.

With a vibrant cast of vividly realized characters, Moloka'i is the true-to-life chronicle of a people who embraced life in the face of death. Such is the warmth, humor, and compassion of this novel that "few readers will remain unchanged by Rachel's story" (mostlyfiction.com).

From Publishers Weekly
Compellingly original in its conceit, Brennert's sweeping debut novel tracks the grim struggle of a Hawaiian woman who contracts leprosy as a child in Honolulu during the 1890s and is deported to the island of Moloka'i, where she grows to adulthood at the quarantined settlement of Kalaupapa. Rachel Kalama is the plucky, seven-year-old heroine whose family is devastated when first her uncle Pono and then she develop leprous sores and are quarantined with the disease. While Rachel's symptoms remain mild during her youth, she watches others her age dying from the disease in near total isolation from family and friends. Rachel finds happiness when she meets Kenji Utagawa, a fellow leprosy victim whose illness brings shame on his Japanese family. After a tender courtship, Rachel and Kenji marry and have a daughter, but the birth of their healthy baby brings as much grief as joy, when they must give her up for adoption to prevent infection. The couple cope with the loss of their daughter and settle into a productive working life until Kenji tries to stop a quarantined U.S. soldier from beating up his girlfriend and is tragically killed in the subsequent fight. The poignant concluding chapters portray Rachel's final years after sulfa drugs are discovered as a cure, leaving her free to abandon Moloka'i and seek out her family and daughter. Brennert's compassion makes Rachel a memorable character, and his smooth storytelling vividly brings early 20th-century Hawaii to life. Leprosy may seem a macabre subject, but Brennert transforms the material into a touching, lovely account of a woman's journey as she rises above the limitations of a devastating illness.

Beyond Kalaupapa
By jeff koch
What a story about a difficult subject. I knew how Kalaupapa ends - 1946 the miracle drug is available and patients can be "paroled" after 6 negative tests. Thoughtful is how I'd describe the author's letting us in on how the people of Hawaii handled those who came down with this terrible disease. I was glued to this story, Rachel and Sister Catherine, Rachel and her husband, Rachel and her Ohana. Plus, there's a bit of Viktor Frankl here: not only "if it doesn't kill you, it makes you a better person," but also: grow where you're planted, as some might say. I am a Polio Survivor and have a personal glimpse into what had to have been going on in the patients' minds as they began life anew in Kalaupapa. The Pali is so majestic when looking down at it from the overlook in the uplands. A appreciated the realistically sensitive portrayal of now Saint Father Damien. My hope is that the peninsula remains "special" even after the few remaining patients move on because it is a special.

an very interesting, novel about the history of leprosy and a successful leper colony
By Susan
This is an age old tale about the miserable lives that many disease-disabled people have endured, through millenia, due to social ignorance and lack of scientific ways to cure their medical maladies. In this historical novel, the reader is take to Hawaii, specifically to the leper colony of Moloka'i, where the main character becomes trapped in an infected body that exiles her to a life of severe discrimination and fear about her disease. Being separated from her family is only the first of many devastating situations, on the isolated Hawaiian island but she learns to create a sense of family among the inmates of the diseased community.

Over time, science and the socially-concerned take over the governing of the leper colony and some of the infected are cured of their disfiguring ailments, later returning to normal life within healthy communities. Some infected succumb to their disease and never regain their families and former lives. Throughout the plot, the heroine allows herself to become a subject for a scientific study and a possible cure for leprosy. Her actions become, in no small way, a means to eventually enact state laws that will financially, socially and emotionally support the colony, its inhabitants and the dedicated caregivers.

The author offers a superb description of the devastating effects of leprosy, not only physically, but mentally, as its victims go through the stages of the disease. The original inmates of the colony have learned to give up hope of ever again, becoming a part of a normal family; of having the resources to cure their disease; of being in exile; and languishing in the intellectual wasteland, as they wait for a painful, lonely death.

The characters are varied, the setting details are realistic and interesting and the story line is balanced with hope and despair, love and hate, joy and heartbreak, and the age-old struggle to not only cure diseases but to cure the general public's fear and loathing of those infected with such deadly illnesses. Even though leprosy has a modern cure and the world has generally accepted that the disease is not a lifelong sentence of suffering and death, the theme of the novel rings true today, since the "new" plagues are HIV-AIDS and Ebola, to name only two.

Although this novel would never win a big literary prize, the author offers much hope and dignity to those who have, or currently do, suffer from a life-threatening, highly contagious disease. Besides being a well-documented and interesting story about American history, this novel makes the reader feel that there is some justice in this world and that it can be earned by those who believe they can affect medical research and social attitudes, if even in some small way.

If you enjoy this novel, try The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama, which also delves into the topic of leprosy, in WWII Japan era.

Excellent Story - Four and a half Stars
By Dataman
Alan Brennert’s Molokai is an extraordinary epic that begins in old Hawaii in 1891. When this isolated island chain finally came in contact with people from other lands, the population had no natural immunity to many of the new diseases brought to their shores. The native Hawaiians proved unusually susceptible to leprosy.

Molokai follows the fictional life of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy, through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and, eventually into old age. Taken from her home and family, she is forced into a cage on the bow of a ship along with other lepers and deported to the quarantined settlement of Kalaupapa on the island of Moloka'i. Yet Rachel grows up and finds friends family, life, love and happiness on the island, in addition to the difficulties and tragedies that we all face in life. She even falls in love and marries Kenji, a fellow patient. But the daughter she bears must immediately be given up for adoption to avoid infection.

Rachel’s life coincides with so much of the history of Hawaii: colonialism, the fall of the monarchy, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The book is rich with historical and cultural details. The author has researched the material well, drawing on historical accounts and weaving in traditional Hawaiian customs.

The book is a deeply moving account of the hardships borne by those who developed leprosy in Hawaii. With a vibrant cast characters, Moloka'i is the story of people who had so much taken from them but who also gained so much in the process. Rachel is a truly memorable character. Though leprosy may seem like an undesirable subject for a novel, Brennert's compassion transforms the book into a touching account of Rachel’s life. Brennert's style is easy to read. In almost every sense, this is a five-star book, with the exception of his average prose. Brennert's real strengths are his storytelling and character development, which more than make up for the prose. Moloka'i will take you on an emotional roller coaster.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears (Picture Puffin Books), by James Marshall

?What a sweet child,? says a newcomer in town about Goldilocks. ?That?s what you think,? a neighbor replies. For Goldilocks is one of those naughty little girls who does exactly as she pleases?even if that means sampling the three bears? porridge, breaking Baby Bear?s chair, and sleeping in his bed. James Marshall?s offbeat and inventive telling of this familiar tale will enchant readers, young and old.?A delightfully irreverent retelling of an old favorite is illustrated with delicious humor and contemporary touches.? ? From Publishers Weekly
"Once there was a little girl named Goldilocks. 'What a sweet child,' said someone new in town. 'That's what you think,' said a neighbor." From the very first sentence this book takes off in typical Marshall style. Goldilocks is a self-satisfied girl used to doing exactly as she pleases. So when signs around the entrance to the shortcut read "DANGER," "TURN BACK," "VERY RISKY" and even "GO THE OTHER WAY," the undaunted lass tromps headlong into adventure. Once inside the house of the three bears, Goldilocks notices a lot of coarse brown fur and thinks, "They must have kitties." She thrashes her way through the bears' domain. Eventually, they return and scare the girl off, but whether or not she has learned her lesson is left to the imagination. Marshall's wonderfully unique characters are as offbeat and self-propelled as ever; the book boasts many jolly details and the pictures burst with color. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2 Another delightful romp through the fairy tale forest from the author of Red Riding Hood (Dial, 1987) and James Marshall's Mother Goose (Farrar, 1986) . This retelling is a Victorianesque version of a chubby, blond-hair strong-willed ``naughty little girl'' who takes a shortcut through the woods on her way to buy muffins in the next village, and invades the home of the three sophisticated bears. While the basic storyline may be recognizable to young listeners, sight gags and ironic wit are whimsically employed for those who already know the tale and/or Marshall's other works (for example, a white hen perches atop the bears' house). The tone is straightforward and droll. Marshall is careful to include basic motifs from the original tale: the bowls of porridge, the chairs, and the beds, but he takes liberties in his commentary: ``She walked right in without even bothering to knock'' and in the characters' exclamations, like ``Patooie!'' and ``Egads!'' His playful watercolor illustrations fill the pages in their comic portrayal of these well-known figures. Whether shared in a lap or with a group, this one's a winner. A modern, humorous spin on a well-known tale of misbehavior
By A Customer
Putting a modern, humorous spin on a well-known tale of misbehavior, James Marshall brings new energy to the story of Goldilocks. Although devoid of the moral asides of the original tale, Marshall makes it clear to the audience that they should not follow Goldilock's example. He definitively explains, "Goldilocks was one of those naughty girls who do exactly as they please." Implicitly, his in-depth illustrations expand this characterization. With a smirk of mischief on her face, Goldilocks romps through the bears' house ill-mannerly licking a bowl and putting her feet on a chair. The detailed, colorful illustrations allow readers to step into the bears' home almost as intrusively as Goldilocks has. The reader can see that a postcard from Santa Cruz rests on the mantel and that Papa Bear wears bunny slippers, contributing to this modern version of the story. Upon returning to their invaded home, the bears each respond to Goldilocks' intrusion. "'Somebody has been sitting in my chair!' said Papa Bear. 'Somebody has been sitting in my chair!' said Mama Bear. 'Somebody has been sitting in my chair' said Baby Bear." This use of repetition, common to most versions of the tale, is appealing to listening ears and a welcome sight to struggling readers. In Marshall's adaptation, Baby Bear adds that his chair has been "broken to smithereens". This exemplifies the humorous touches that make the language vivid and fresh for readers (and listeners) of all ages.

The Great James Marshall Has it Just RIght
By M. Allen Greenbaum
The only qualities shared by James Marshall's Goldilocks and that other famous eating-stting-and-sleeping girl are their hair color and a very low tolerance for porridges, chairs, and beds that aren't just right. This Goldilocks is...well...a brat, "one of those naughty little girls who do exactly what they please.

Ignoring her mother's directive, as well as several "Roadrunner"-like signs ("Turn Back," "Go The Other Way," "Not a Good Idea), she takes the forbidden shortcut and happens upon the house of Papa, Mama, and Baby Bear.

Marshall's revives this old chestnut with his prank-loving, slightly mean-spirited heroine. Aside from disobeying her mother, she seems gluttonous, spoiled, and not overly bright. ALthough pictures of bears hang all over the walls, and she notices "a lot of coarse brown fur," all she can think is "They must have kitties." She devours baby Bear's porridge, breaks the chair, and has the nerve to crawl into Papa's bed after finding the other two unsuitable. Her rationale is the repeated "I don't mind if I do."

The animals' language accounts for much of the humor. The chair is not just broken--it's broken to "smithereens!" Papa Bear cries "Patooie!" after scalding his tongue, and when Baby Bear gets similarly dramatic, Mama Bear, who represents the happy medium both in size and disposition, admonishes them "Now really, that's quite enough." While the Bears are pleasant and dressed in Easter-best clothes, Papa Bear is clearly "not amused" when he sees his rumpled bed. And what does Papa Bear do when he catches Goldilocks in bed, her teetch clutching a blue blanket? Marshall combines a mild message--like that uttered by some proper English landowner--with an animal delivery: "Now see here!" roared Papa Bear."

The bright ink and watercolor illustrations lend humor and flesh out the story. Emotions are exaggerated as in a silent movie: GOldilocks sticks out her tongue, fkashes us a sneaky look, and, for contrast, pauses thoughtfully with her thin straight mouth as she considers her choices. THe book won a Caldecott honor. Although we can be fairly certain that Goldilocks won't be "visiting" the bears again, you and your young audience will return to Marshall's "Goldilocks" whenever a slightly subversive and slyly humour tale would be just right.

Once there was a nice little girl nam--Oh wait a minute!
By R, your friendly neighborhood reviewer
Whoever knew a day would come when Goldilocks', sweet little Goldilocks' squeaky clean image would be finally tarnished. I mean this chick stole and tresspassed and no one ever said a word. But in this James Marshall retelling, Goldilocks is potrayed as, well-a brat. When a new lady moves into town, she comments to a man about how sweet the little girl looks. He replies with, "That's what YOU think."

One morning our antagonist is asked by her mother to go buy some muffins in the next village, making Goldilocks promise not to take a shortcut, due to bears. But since the story is called "and the Three Bears," we know Goldilocks takes the shortcut. Meanwhile, the three bears are sitting down for breakfast-porridge, of course. But the porridge is too hot, so they go off on their three-seat bicycle. Minutes later Goldilocks finds herself at the bear's house, and the famed porridge tasting/bed sampling episode begins. I'm sure you know what happens afterwards(The bears come home, and so on...)

James Marshall(of the George and Martha books) has crafted a fresh new take on a famous fairy tale and succeded, with a Caldecott Honor Medal to boot.

As always, R, your friendly neighborhood reviewer.

An Absolute Must-Have Book for Aspiring LEGO Animators
By Ashley Glennon
This book delivers on the title’s promise and actually instructs you, step-by-step, on how to create your own LEGO movies. First time animators will be delighted to learn that all you need is a smart phone and a few LEGO bricks to get started, while more experienced animators will appreciate chapters on cinematography and post production.

Among the charms of this book is how approachable the authors, David Pagano and David Pickett, describe nearly every conceivable aspect of making a LEGO movie. The authors combine a conversational style with rich illustrations and simple explanations that just make you want to put down the book and start filming!

What I particularly liked is that the book can be picked up at practically any point—as the authors suggest—and you can learn something. Nearly every photo has a caption or adjacent text that offers a stand-alone tip. And beyond that, the authors offer mini-exercises to punctuate smooth animation, set building, lighting and more.
The pinnacle of these exercises is a LEGO building activity called the PaganoPuppet. In this exercise, you’re given page-by-page instructions on how to build a highly articulated, 8-inch tall LEGO man that you can use in your own animations.

But don’t misunderstand; this book breaks down animation to the point that if you only have two LEGO bricks and a camera, you will likely have fun.

Despite the fact that you can pick up the book at any point and enjoy it, the book naturally flows from getting started to making your Hollywood debut. Eight chapters are broken into well-indexed subcategories that make it easy to find an item of interest.

If you have even the slightest interest in LEGO animation—or were fascinated with The LEGO Movie-- I highly recommend this book. Pagano and Pickett are great teachers and you will be making LEGO animations in no time. As a matter of fact one of Pagano’s movies appeared in the original LEGO movie for just a few seconds. After reading this book, maybe one of your movies will be next!

The best LEGO® animation book from two of the best animators
By Shawn A. Harrel
This is THE ONLY book you'll need on LEGO® Animation, written by two of the best animators around. David Pickett has a popular YouTube channel with 1/4 million subscribers and Pagano has had his animation work featured in The LEGO® Movie among other things. They've spent hour and days (more likely months...maybe years!) of their lives animating with everyone's favorite highly sophisticated inter-locking brick system. Now they've put that information into a beautiful book.

This book covers animation basics and techniques specific to LEGO®, but also standard animation concepts that hold true for any animation: exaggeration, squash and stretch, timing, easing, follow-through and more. It's all there and explained in a way that anyone can understand. Also, did I mention the beautiful pictures and examples?

On top of all this there are building instructions and a wealth of information about technology, frame rates, camera types, etc... And...oh yeah, ideas for brainstorming and coming up with ideas.

You really can't go wrong with this and the price can't be beat. Put it next to your LEGO® sets and start animating your own brickfilms. Play well!
