Too dry and factual

I have to say, as travel guides go, this one is pretty dry. There's a lot of facts in this book, but most of it is listings/information, totally fact, and I can get that elsewhere on the Internet in a more easily searched way. When I buy a travel guide it is for recommendations/opinions, and all I can say is, they're a small part of the 1109 pages. This book certainly did not make me want to jump on a plane to Australia.

John Ulrich Giesy's series of novels detailing the adventures of Jason Croft on the planet Palos. Jason projects his mind, and travels the astral plane to the planet Palos in search for the woman he senses across the void. She is literally his soul-mate, and he discovers a suitable body to inhabit when the former resident gives into despair and takes leave of it. As he uses the body to physically interact with the people and animals of the planet, he uses his astral projection to function in the physical world about him.
Jason Croft appears in the three stories in this book, which were written contemporary with Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter novels. It's a fair speculation to say Jason Croft is likely informed by Burroughs, though Giesy makes of his character and surrounding world something unique and quite intriguing.

Wrong, according to Suzana Herculano-Houzel. Humans have developed cognitive abilities that outstrip those of all other animals, but not because we are evolutionary outliers. The human brain was not singled out to become amazing in its own exclusive way, and it never stopped being a primate brain. If we are not an exception to the rules of evolution, then what is the source of the human advantage?

Herculano-Houzel shows that it is not the size of our brain that matters but the fact that we have more neurons in the cerebral cortex than any other animal, thanks to our ancestors' invention, some 1.5 million years ago, of a more efficient way to obtain calories: cooking. Because we are primates, ingesting more calories in less time made possible the rapid acquisition of a huge number of neurons in the still fairly small cerebral cortex -- the part of the brain responsible for finding patterns, reasoning, developing technology, and passing it on through culture.

Herculano-Houzel shows us how she came to these conclusions -- making "brain soup" to determine the number of neurons in the brain, for example, and bringing animal brains in a suitcase through customs. Suzana Herculano-Houzel has revolutionized the field of evolutionary neurobiology and her engaging story is told in her new book The Human Advantage. Being a neuroscientist myself for three decades, I can think of no other contemporary neuroscientist who has transformed the field as much as Dr. Herculano-Houzel---and she is just getting started! In keeping with the great neuroanatomist, Santiago Ramon y Cajal, she has redefined our thoughts about the neuroarchitecture of the human brain and its position among other mammalian (and non-mammalian!) brains. By devising innovative histological techniques to systematically quantify neural cells, her work confirms that neurons DO count and, as described in this book, they make humans stand out among the earth's inhabitants. A big change for a neglected topic

I used to be uneasy about claims that the human brain was special because it is large for our body size: relative size just didn't seem like it could be the best measure of whatever enabled intelligence.

At last, Herculano-Houzel has invented a replacement for that measure. Her impressive technique for measuring the number of neurons in a brain has revolutionized this area of science.

We can now see an important connection between the number of cortical neurons and cognitive ability. I'm glad that the book reports on research that compares the cognitive abilities of enough species to enable moderately objective tests of the relevant hypotheses (although the research still has much room for improvement).

We can also see that the primate brain is special, in a way that enables large primates to be smarter than similarly sized nonprimates. And that humans are not very special for a primate of our size, although energy constraints make it tricky for primates to reach our size.

I was able to read the book quite quickly. Much of it is arranged in an occasionally suspenseful story about how the research was done. It doesn't have lots of information, but the information it does have seems very new (except for the last two chapters, where Herculano-Houzel gets farther from her area of expertise).

Challenging Brain Science Dogma!

Herculano-Houzel, provides compelling evidence that the human brain is remarkable, but yet not special. That is, not special when considered in the light of evolution. The human brain has a larger number of neurons in the cerebral cortex than any other species. The author argues we are primates and our brains have evolved in accordance with primate scaling rules that make it possible for a large number of neurons to fit into a relatively small volume as compared with other mammals. Thanks to the technological innovation, cooking, introduced by our ancestors we were able to escape the energy constraints of a raw food diet. Our neurons needed a larger number of calories that were only possible via cooking of food. This book challenges central tenets often promoted by authors, and instructors in neuroscience. Does the human brain consist of 100 billion neurons? Does the human brain consist of 10 x more glia than neurons? The answer is no to both of these questions.

In this excellent book, London-based contemporary art critic Kent sets out to explain composition?why and how painters divide up the surfaces of their pictures?by looking closely at specific masterpieces. Her very effective selections include well-known works by masters such as Manet, Gainsborough, and Picasso. To describe and illustrate ideas like perspective, color, and narrative, she naturally leans more heavily on representational traditions, but the final few pages of her short book do address more recent experiments with abstraction. Kent's captions are deftly written, and she articulately explains both the conceptual and tangible elements contained within a four-sided work of art. Like previous titles in Dorling Kindersley's extremely useful series (e.g., Sculpture, LJ 11/15/94), Kent's is geared toward the beginning student of painting or art history, and it's easy to imagine this book serving as an invaluable supplementary text for a first-year art history course. An Excellent Review Of Artistic Composition

This book is an interesting review of the concepts of artistic composition. It has a very good balance between written explanation and visual examples. The examples are all from master artists of both well known and lesser known stature which helps to keep up interest. I read this book from the local library and later decided that I wanted to own it myself. I think that anyone interested in art would enjoy this book.

A fun, informative, easy read!

This book is great. It covers so many different topics -- some I didn't even know where physics related! Before reading this book I did not have a strong understanding of physics, but I did find it interesting and I feel smarter after finishing it. I feel that I can relate more to my favorite show, Big Bang Theory, now :) My favorite topic is "Why is the sky blue" relating to optics and light refraction. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for something different. It is very well written. Easy to understand yet still very intelligent content. 5 stars from start to finish!

Comprehensive

This book addresses over 250 scientific subjects in ten categories such as classical mechanics, solids and fluids, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics. The author addresses somewhat simple subjects such as what is physics, velocity, force, fluids, and more complex subjects as What is Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation, What is the Doppler Effect, and What does quantum mechanics tell us about hydrogen atoms. The book has some illustrations, many details even educated non-scientists do not know, and each section ends with a list of Further Readings.

The book is very comprehensive and many people who secure it will want to save it as an excellent source for information when information is desired. However, because it is so comprehensive some people will find it to be too technical. They may also be put off by the formulas the author inserts. But even these people might want to ignore parts they are uninterested in and use the book for the information that satisfies them; this is usually in the beginning of each discussion.

Definitely not the "For Dummies" edition

As a science nerd from way back, the recent uptick in interest in all things technical warms my heart. This book largely fans those flames, with a few caveats for non-scientific readers.

The book starts with classical mechanics, but covers a wide range of topics - matter and energy, atoms and solar systems, particles and waves (with some discussion of dual-nature implications). The writing is mostly accessible, with some topic headings that were clearly intended to appeal to a lay audience - "What does your blood pressure mean?," "What makes an atomic bomb work?" (Don't get your hopes up - the book won't help you build one.). There are lots of real-world examples used throughout, including everything from curve balls to x-rays.

Lay audience notwithstanding, however, the explanations in the text refer to things like polar coordinates and partial differentials, with the assumption that the reader knows what those are, and the formulas use Greek letters freely (for readers who aren't up on their rho's and tau's, it will be helpful to print out a Greek alphabet for reference while reading, if only so you know how to pronounce the equations). As a visual thinker, I do wish there had been more diagrams, or even a video. (Maybe a companion guide viewable on a 3D device?).

Looking at the book with an editor's eye, I was sad to find some typos of the type that a spell-check program would miss (including a figure reference in Chapter 4 that I'm pretty sure was off), and some odd sequencing of topics - in particular, the text discusses quantum mechanics before optics and atoms, which, among other things, meant that diffraction gratings were referred to before they were introduced. There is an index, which helps somewhat, but I wish there had also been a glossary. The chapter on quantum mechanics is one of the harder ones, and I also wound up completely confused at one point while reading it, until I realized that the "K" I was reading in the current equation meant "kinetic energy," while the previous "K" had meant "Kelvin." It helps to take frequent contemplation and comprehension breaks.

Foibles notwithstanding, I found this to be an interesting and valuable work, and a bit of a brain workout (NTTAWWT).

About the Author
Walter Savitch is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of California-San Diego. He received his PhD in mathematics from the University of California-Berkeley in 1969. Since that time he has been on the faculty of the University of California-San Diego (UCSD). He served as director of the UCSD Interdisciplinary PhD program in cognitive science for over ten years. He has served as a visiting researcher at the computer science departments of the University of Washington in Seattle and at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and has been a visiting scholar at the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica in Amsterdam.
Kenrick Mock is an Associate Professor at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. He has also taught at Washington Stat University, Portland State University, and the University of California-Davis. He teaches undergraduate computer science courses across the curriculum including introductory C++, Java(TM), Visual Basic(R) for non-programmers, algorithms, computer security, and artificial intelligence. With the Coastal Marine Institute at UAA, he helped develop a computer system to aid in research about Alaska sea ice and the atmosphere. Before becoming a teacher, Mock was a research scientist and software engineer at Intel(TM). He received a PhD in computer science from UC Davis.

I wasn't disappointed at all

I knew Walter Savitch through his Absolute Java book when I took a programming class at university (I have a very basic background in Java). I was really impressed with his style and clear explanation.

I decided lately to learn C++ but wasn't sure what book I should choose. Gladly, I came across this book which I borrowed from a friend. I wasn't disappointed at all. It is the best book ever to teach C++ to beginners. It is highly recommended that you have a minimal idea on what programming is, if you don't, you still can use this book as an introductory for C++ and programming in general.

I gave this book 5 starts because:
1. the explanation is super clear.
2. it walks you through programming step by step.
3. it anticipate the problems you might face such as (I typed the code exactly as it written in the book but it doesn't work! the answer is you might have an older compiler and to fix this issue you should ....etc)
4. it contains a summary at the end of each chapter
5. it has self-test questions
6. it has programming project exercises
7. the answer to the self-tests are provided at the end of each chapter.

As a result, I have purchased my own copy! I highly recommend this book!

Fantastic C++ Book

I 'absolutely' love this book. It is a great overview of the language and its newest features without spending too much time on the basics.

The author was also open to discussion. I was able to email Mock and ask him a question about cpp11 shared pointers I felt was confusing, and he was open to talking about it. Awesome guy.

As a C++ dev, I really like it.

I bought this book in the airport book shop while traveling to an appointment, the book was so simple and simpleminded that I needed and air sick bag. This is so 1980;s style of selling that has nothing to do with real corporate sales. This should be a book they give in high school business class as they say those that can do and those that can't teach. I have closed million dollar deals over breakfast, got on a plane and closed another deal the next day with a large retail chain CEO. It amazes ne how many corporations buy into this a training model. Goes to show you why big companies are not making thier comps,profits and handeling the right customers. Ethics are long gone for sales, it's just sell it and worry about the problems later. If I used these inane tools in my headquarter calls my business would not be what it is today. I would like to know who her largest customers were? What really did she sell? What was her biggest deal other than BS.

Perfect Selling

"Perfect Selling" by Linda Richardson is a good title for anyone wanting to sharpen their sales skills. The book is around 170 pages and covers 5 main areas:

1. Connect - establish rapport with customers and really care about them.
2. Explore - ask good questions and find their need(s).
3. Leverage - after finding their need(s), show how your product/service can satisfy the need.
4. Resolve - learn to overcome objections.
5. Act - various techniques for closing the sale.

The book may be read in a few sittings and contains valuable content for the seasoned sales pro or anyone wanting to break into sales. While there may not be anything earth shattering, the book is a valuable resource.

This is the way I was taught to sell many years ago. I've gotten so good that I have forgotten many of the primary techniques that are the fundamentals of sales. I bought copies for all of my sales guys. Very good tool.

Designed “to provide a more inclusive and contemporary history: one that paints a more accurate picture of the notable events, people, groups and movements, ideas, issues, and cultural expressions of Latinos/as in America,” this set certainly comes close. It begins with three overview essays by time (1492–1900, 1900–1965, and 1965–present), followed by nearly 300 alphabetically arranged entries. These include familiar topics such as Jennifer Lopez, Mariel boatlift, and North American Free Trade Agreement along with the less well-known Farah strike, “Greaser Act” (1855), and Reies López Tijerina. There are a mix of historical topics (Bear Flag Revolt, Taos rebellion) and more contemporary ones (Basketball, Lowriders) as well as entries on specific cultures (Bolivians, Dominicans, Venezuelans) and social issues (Gangs, Poverty, Tracking). The signed articles range from one to four pages (most are two pages) and are well written and appropriate for high-school students and up. Every entry ends with see also references and further-reading suggestions. Volume 1 contains a “Topic Finder” as well as an alphabetical list of contents. A chronology, a complete bibliography (including a few Web sites), and an index end volume 2. There are a number of comparable reference works, including Encyclopedia Latina: History, Culture, and Society in the United States (2005), The Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States (2005), and Latino America: A State-by-State Encyclopedia (2009).
