As payback for a neglected and unhappy childhood, sixteen-year-old Helen plans the ultimate humiliation for her 'respectable' middle-class parents - giving birth to an illegitimate child. Forced by her parents to adopt the baby out, Helen flees the sterile atmosphere of the family home and embarks on a journey of independence that takes her from the sordid world of drugs and prostitution in Kings Cross to the rugged beauty of Land, where she finds true love and peace amongst the simple-living Yolgnu tribe.
But this idyllic existence can't last forever, and Helen soon finds herself drawn back into the clutches of her scheming parents, where she is taken from the peaks of happiness to the depths of despair, climaxing in a tense and bloody fight to hold on to all that she values most.
'This is a novel that the author describes as a journey of self-discovery and he is absolutely right. This story deserves to be read by every troubled teenager to give them some hope for their future... we discover that parents sometimes have a lot to answer for when we learn how much suffering the cause their children'.- John Morrow's Pick of the Week.
"Robert Menzies' story of a young life devastated by dysfunctional family life could echo that of many teenagers today and yesterday,... and the moral of the story is that hope springs eternal - and even parents can make amends.'

Not What I Thought it was going to be...

****SPOILER ALERT****
Culture Shock is a coming of age story that follows a girl that comes from a neglected home from birth until adulthood.
When I first read the synopsis I thought it would be an interesting read which towards the end it was, however I really found the back story told in the parent's POV, the development of the story, and the development of the characters to be quite depressing. All of the main characters' behaviors and attitudes were appalling and selfish for most of the book and it wasn't until Helen ran away that the story began to really develop towards something more. The author does well in describing the different places in Australia that Helen's journey of self-discovery takes her on not to mention the brief back story of the Aboriginal people's trouble with the Government and the abuse of their sacred lands. All in all the ending was satisfactory as Helen reconciles with her father and manages to find happiness in her life despite everything she has gone through. The book has mention of hard core drugs, murder, domestic abuse, prostitution, abortion, pregnancy, and there are sex scenes. It is definitely not a teen read although it is about a teen's life. I like the cover.
